I’m about to refresh the front end and while I have the forks apart was wondering about changing the springs from progressive to linear fork springs, any observations welcome

Imo, the correct* linear springs are superior to progressive for sporting applications. Pretty damn sure most suspension gurus/experts agree.

If you are mostly just cruising the main roads and highways... I'm sure progressive springs are just fine and a decent improvement over the woefully soft stock springs.

Good valving obviously plays a very important part in an overall package improvement.

*for honest rider+bike weight and claimed riding style

I am also a big fan of using the "correct" springs at the front. Usually you end up with less preload to get the desired ride height, which make for a more supple ride. +1 on upgrading the valving as well, I have had great results with Racetech Gold Valves although their "base" settings tend to be a little firm for the rough roads here.

So nobody has actually done it, just the usual advice I already knew

The actual bike doesn't really matter. While the 8th Gen is cool, there's nothing special about it that would make the advice or outcome different.

If you like cornering, which is why you bought a sport bike I hope, then linear springs suited to your weight is the better option.
