I managed to get that piston out without splitting the cases also.

I am waiting on a 26mm clutch basket nut tool from the UK before I can go any further....Grrrrrrrrr!

Probably, but won't be able to tell until I can actually split the cases.

One item that is blowing my mind is that the parts list says the front and rear con rods are different? I wonder why?

    So weird.

It's unbelievable how someone can mistreat a Honda into that condition in that amount of time.

My God.... Just check and/or change the damn oil.

"It's a Honda. I don't have to do anything, they run forever."

Starting to clean everything up while waiting on parts....Seems like this engine went into a lot of different bikes globally.

Starting in 1982-to at least 2009 there were versions of this engine in production with upgrades along the way.

Starting the clean up process on the cases right now. This is the upper case.

    IMG_0231.JPG

Check out this tiny crankshaft.....Too bad it is wasted. Found a decent one for $118 USD so add that to financial tally.

great work jim ! keep goin.

where are pix of damaged parts like bad rod bearing ?

if the crank only has bearing lines but no discoloration could be reground with oversize bearings as a last resort.

Thanks S-Man....trying study this engine has been fun. Good design that lasted a LONG time in production.

Unlike the VF400/500 that must have been developed from the VT250.

If you want to see them I will post. Amazing what a beating these engines can take and keep running.

im especially interested cuz my '90 vtr wiped out a rod bearing 2 months after i bought it at WFO, most likely from fuel dilution in oil.

i started takin it apart but the special clutch basket nut stopped me. ended up buyin another 250 and swopped engines.

did Honda use one of those nuts with 4 notches cut out? Just pulled my VF500 clutch and a normal socket was enough. CL125s used one of those nuts and thats where having a friend with lathe/ mill comes in handy. he whipped up a tool and i did the rebuild in no time.

Yeah, that 26mm clutch nut is unlike any other out there. Motion Pro or K&L Supply does not sell a tool for it so it must be obscure. I had to order one from the UK and will probably never use it again LOL.

Based on what I have seen on EbAy these 250's must spin rod rod bearings fairly frequently. I took a long shot and ordered a $6.00 crankshaft off of ebay and it turned out the rod crank pin was bad. Oh well. I just ordered another crank and It looks like a winner this time.

Here are some of the picture of the spun bearing / crank / rod. As mentioned the bike still ran, and actually started right up. It had a sound like a badly adjusted valve tappet. I have never heard a spun rod bearing before so it was education to hear it. I know what it sound like now.

Crankpin below...it had had about .025" wear on it. All of it on one side only. That ain't gonna buff out.

    IMG_0234.JPG

Rod bearings....the tabs were completely gone. The were rotating in the connecting rod and just worn down, throwing metal into the oil pan. The bearing inserts were razor thin and the upper bearing was almost gone completely.

    IMG_0237.JPG

Connecting rod showing where the bearing was spinning. The rod is out of round and wasted.

are the rod part numbers specific to the 250 or did they use vf500 parts like with the valve components?
Have you tracked down anyone that has any of the main/rod bearings?
