Update on start issue.......I had on hand 2 starter relays. One brand new...the other used but said to be working when I bought it.

I decided to try swapping out the relay using the used one. Nothing changed.

Before I try the new one.....wanted to also report:

    1. unlike what I originally reported...I am getting a click at the relay when I hit the start button.

    2. when I bridge the two posts at the relay w/key in the on position - I get nothing. Should it at least spark? Later on I will stick a voltage tester on them to make sure I'm getting voltage from the battery.

    3. the fuse is still good on both relays. It's that old fashioned one - straight piece of metal.

That's about where I stand at the moment.

I will test voltage and providing it's there swap out for the new unit and then report back. Just wanted to post the update for now.

    Thanks!

I must have missed where you jumped from a known good (car) battery and eliminated that possibility.

You didn't miss it.......but I will do that tomorrow......brand new Motobatt the culprit? Guess we have to eliminate that as a possibility. Thanks!

    Brand new doesn’t mean it’s good … don’t ask me how I know …

Jumped the battery from my truck.......and still just a click.

Changed the relay to a brand new one......and still just a click.

The GOOD news is I rode the VF500F over to a buddy's house who was having an irrigation problem and that was VERY enjoyable!

Now I know why I have more than one Interceptor!

    :)

Is it the starter solenoid clicking? Maybe a poor connection? Loose, corroded or oxidized.

I'll have to say, this is odd. Died while running, and then would not crank, just click the solenoid. And then a known good battery does not change anything. Those typically don't happen together.

Describe what it was like when it died. Were you moving?

And if a solenoid is clicking, it's usually working. I would say now check the starter motor and maybe the cable, but that doesn't explain it dying. Could have been a coincidence too I suppose.

Thanks.....I will double check all connections - couldn't hurt.

I think the engine dying and the non-starting issue are not related.

I think the engine dying is a by-product of the issue of the engine not running as it should (possibly fuel-related) that I mentioned. Seems OK on a center stand but once riding doesn't sound so great.

So when I dialed the idle back last time before shooting that last video, it impacted it when I was coming to a stop with engine under zero throttle. Low idle made the engine die on me. I stopped at another stop sign earlier in the ride and the engine did not die - which I took as a good sign - making some progress.

I wonder if this is a problem with my starter. I have a spare starter for the bike - brand new - in my box of spares. I guess I could wire it up to my starter relay and see if it runs. That would tell us something.

Busy day today so will squeeze this in over the weekend.

Thanks for the help and input - will keep you advised! :)

You can apply battery voltage right to the starter or on the side of the relay that is going to the starter and see if it spins before tearing into anything.

Great idea...thanks! Eliminating the starter as a problem would be very helpful!

Did you try to bump start it?

I may have missed it, but after the carb rebuild did you check the spark plugs to see if you have a rich or worse a lean condition?

I would actually do both, starting at the solenoid. If it cranks, the cable and starter are good. If not, THEN go to the starter itself. If it still doesn't crank, then you know you have something to dig into. If it does then crank, then the cable from the solenoid to the starter is suspect.

If it doesn't crank at the starter, verify the engine can turn over (if it had a good starter).

I'm not sure if someone who was nervous about pushing a bike, is the best candidate to start learning how to bump start one, with a VF750F.

That's what I would like to eleminate first, is that the engine isn't locked up for some reason. Thus the bump start question.

I would consider having to push one in those circumstances as under duress. Not a normal situation.
