I'm going to take her out again later tonight after dark.

But thought I'd run her a bit while she's parked to see how she sounds. I can't really tell where the problem is.

    Cold start without any choke.

    Any thoughts? Thanks!

PS - that red light is for the tail light....

Is the idle incapable of being adjusted down below that?

It "was" dropping down on it's own not long after it warms up. Just didn't do it this time. I'll work on that later (after it cools off) and report back. Thanks!

Then it's not right. Welcome (again) to the wonderful world of new-to-you, used and modified motorcycles.

It's not gonna be getting the idle adjustment "just right". It's always gonna be too high, you're gonna try to adjust it down which seems like it works, then it's gonna fall on it's face a die. Only for you to adjust it back up, at which point it screams again.

If the airbox is intact, the enrichen valves ("choke") not stuck open, the air filter and plugs good...

Do I actually have to type what you know I'm going say?

It does sound good tho dude. Even with shitty phone audio. They will enhance tappety noises, and it sounds pretty damn good to me.

No - and I'm prepared to do it . Just want to explore other possibilities and opinions first.

The way the carbs went on last time - MUCH EASIER - I have no problem pulling and servicing (again) if that makes the problem go away.

    Cool.

And more than just "servicing". Documenting what has been done prior and talking about it. Has it been jetted? Should it be jetted? Is what has been done sound reasonable for the mods?

Everything can "look" fine, it doesn't mean it's right for the application. And don't think it HAS to be back together by the next day.

Documenting EXACTLY what is in there and any settings will greatly help you tune your other, and future, bikes when you nail it.

These 1st gen carbs have those different springs, etc for upper and lowers....and I knew that but didn't keep things separate and into numbered trays. I hope that's not my problem here but it's something I'll have to figure out when I take the carbs back off again.

Good advice though, as always...thanks Capt.....

OK, I turned the idle down a notch. Guess I could go a little lower. Ran her for 5 minutes and she didn't change idle speed at all, so that's gotta be a good thing. Real test will be taking her back out on the road.

OK! That's actually doing pretty good. Seems to settle back down pretty nice. Awesome!!

Shoot for about 1100 after it's warmed up.

    Cool.

Decided to hold off 1 more day to take her out. I put a battery tender on her because it sounded a little weak on starting. Showed 97% when first attached (new Motobatt) so maybe my imagination.

So instead I took the new (to me) '86 VF500F......and had a freaking blast! Absolutely no traffic - cooler temps - and was my first extended ride on her., even if only about 15 miles. It's so quiet too, compared to this double Kerker...lol.... So enjoyable - I'm so happy I made the effort to acquire her!

That 500 might become your favorite if you keep riding it.

Maybe, to be honest, I was thinking the same thoughts last night. But we'll see. Need more seat time on that one plus the other "new" ones for larger sample size. :)

Is there a club for those whose bike won't start and they have to roll it back home?

If so, I'm your newest member.

About 1/2 mile from home on tonight's test ride while coming up to an intersection to stop she died on me. Wouldn't re-start, as in lights came on but no starter engagement. Pulled the side fairing and moved the battery cables back and forth while hitting the start button but nothing doing.

Didn't want to mess with the trailer thing so rolled her home and that sucker has some weight, let me tell you! I had to stop quite a few times and rest. The crazy part is about 2/3 of the way home two cop cars went by (Explorers) and neither one stopped to either check out if I was stealing the bike or offer any assistance. Hell I was on the sidewalk right next to the road and even held my hand up to shield my eyes from the high beams on the lead unit, who dimmed his lights right after - so he must have seen me?

Remember when I said I put a trickle charger on her because she sounded sluggish? My radar should have come on I guess.

And...as far as the test ride....still not sounding right but maybe a bit better than last time. I shot a video but not sure how it came out - will mess with tomorrow.

    Sheesh........

No - have not touched it since last night - full day today and just got in. I'm thinking maybe the starter relay. I have a couple working used ones in my spares box. Will take a look at it tomorrow, hopefully.

Not even a click. Lights dimmed on me though. Shows up good on the video...lol.....

I clocked the distance today coming back in....7/10's of a mile. Undulating sidewalks that cantilevered on various sections. Side road crossings with changes in pavement surface and lots of cracks and ridges.

Left wrist a bit sore this morning (no jokes please - I'm right-handed :) ) but soreness went away by mid-day.

My biggest concern was dumping her. I'd have to resign my forum membership....and turn in my man card if that happened! ;)

Nah, everyone has done it. If anyone states otherwise they are telling a fib. :facts:

Sure....with my first one it happened....maybe 3 different times total. That was well over 10 years ago.

But not since......not with any of these bikes.

The bikes are HEAVY and once they start going over...and you're on the wrong side you're done! Awful feeling......:(

Didn't mention this but I also got some nice gouges in my right leg calf....from the damn foot peg!

Today I will work on the problem - starting with the start relay. Stay tuned......
