I went through 4 boxes of spare RC15 parts today and took photos of every part so I'd have a visual file for them.

    That's just for the RC15.

I also have a bunch for my RC26 bikes.

Not many for the RC36 or my others.

So specific to the 1st and 2nd Gen bikes........what kind of spares should someone have on hand, in general?

Not talking about maintenance items like oil and fuel filters, plugs, etc.

Stuff like turn signals, mirrors, relays, etc.

    Thoughts?

30 amp fuses if you've upgraded the solenoid

    Pulse generators and starter clutch

I keep it all in a spreadsheet with OEM p/ns, location in the garage, retail and what I paid. One tab per bike model. Same for th cars. It makes things so much easier when I need something!

Just wire the terminals together, no worrying about blown fuses!

Kidding. I travel with several of these in the trunk of my 500, and I always make sure my fuse supply is topped up in the spares for either blades or tubes.

On my bikes that still have fusible link style starter solenoids, I install some eyelets and bolt these on it's place. Much more robust and easier to find / carry replacements.

The 86 VF500F fuse "box" (and 85?) is plug n play on the early 500 and is blade style fuses.

I have a few of those in my spares box, plus complete solenoid units...two of which are brand new and another that is used.

I tried to use a modern version with the u-shaped plastic fuse on my '83 VF750 RC15 and couldn't get it to fit right, so stayed with the OEM.

I was referring to the "fuse" box on the triple clamp, not the solenoid. You have to change over everything on the solenoid to fit it. Tho it is possible to modify to fit good, I've done it.

The 1985 VF700F fuse box is blade style and will bolt and plug right in place under the cover on the triple clamp.

Pretty sure that's what my '83 has already.

This is a great idea for a thread. I have two suggestions:

1- I have a feeling we should actually create a very similar sticky thread in each of the Gen sub-forums - as like it or not even getting stuff like OEM fairing panels for relatively recent 6th Gen models is becoming problematic.. Currently there is a lot of knowledge about all the various VFR generations which probably needs to be captured before it is lost forever.

2- I guess that for many VFR models things like regulator rectifers and stators will become a regularly hunted component and indeed if the OEM component has proved unreliable then perhaps a pointer or two towards suppliers of compatible alternatives - like Shindengen RRs from Roadstercycle.com.
