This isn't how I expected to spend Thanksgiving...but no complaints!

Drinking my hot tea this AM and before heading to the garage to work on one of my bikes I thought I'd do a quick browse of FBMP and CL and on CL there she was......'83 VF750 in Daytona (short drive from here).

Sent an email asking for a phone call and about an hour later I get the call.

Suffice to say - I drove up there and brought her home.

The seller bought the bike in Germany brand new. It now has 9,480 miles. He raced it on AMA circuit here in the states for one year. It spend some time in Rhode Island, where it was registered, but he didn't have the title or any registration for it so I will have to go through some hoops to get it titled and registered.

Hasn't run in a few years so will have to go through fuel system and clutch/brake hydraulics. And I'm sure other stuff.

Very clean - all fairings intact with a few scuffs. Has the gold colored Euro rims. Speedo in KMs.

Lock missing for rear cowl (seat release) but I can stick my finger in there to release for now. Aftermarket blinkers and non-OEM windscreen.

    Paid $2,500.

I have my hands full now......o_O

    Thanks all!

Is the carb removal for these the same as for the '86-'87's?

"mostly". They tend to hold on to the carbs a little more, the included angle is a little sharper. Heat the insulator boots with a heat gun prior to levering them out for sure.

They also don't come apart quite as nice either. Getting to the plenum screws is tighter with the (now) hard, rubber intakes in the way of getting an impact driver down there.

OK thanks - good to know. I won't be the one who rebuilds them - just need to do the removal and re-install.

I can't wait to take the tank off and dump that stale gas....pee yoo....that stuff STINKS! Will try to do that tomorrow.

Gotta swap out the funky little aftermarket winkers for the real thing too......

The seller said he had to remove those and the mirrors for racing. Lost the winkers and put these on so it could be used on the street. Said he only raced it for one year. Never laid it down...

Is boiling the rubber in water an actual way to soften/refresh them while they're out? I feel like I've heard that a lot over the years.

Well, that takes me back to 1984. I had that very same colour scheme, sadly my photographer girlfriend was going through a black and white phase...definitely the best colour combo for the 750. I had to buy this one after a crash that occurred on the "test" ride... vf750f.jpg

    NICE pic, Terry!

Your bike still has it's mirrors and blinkers so I guess the rules you raced under were different than the seller I talked to today.

Funny remark he made when I asked if the bike had ever gone down. He replied "No - I guess I wasn't going fast enough!"

Reminds me of what they teach in track events......it's not how fast you go it's how smooth you are....or some such. So true though.....

I was curious about the sticker on the back of the bike, so Googled Jon Woo and found this......very sad......

    http://www.motorsportmemorial.org/focus.php?db=ms&n=5596

A tragic accident while testing for the Honda Racing Team at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California, claimed the life of Jon Woo, a rising star on the road racing circuit, on Saturday afternoon, 20 November 1982.

Jon Woo, 27-year-old northern-California rider, was trying out with the Honda Superbike support team, when he lost control of his bike on the approach to the second bend of the old 3.058-kilometer road course, at an estimated speed of 160 mi/h (257 km/h). The turn had no run-off area and Jon Woo was killed instantly.

Nicknamed as "The Crazy Chinaman", Jon Woo started racing after graduating at the Orland High School. During the 1982 season, he won the Sears Point "Golden Gate Challenge", also taking two top-ten finishes in the Superbike class, and finishing 10th in the Formula 1 road race at Laguna Seca.

Survivors include his parents, Raymond and Bernice Woo; his wife, Jerri; and four sisters. Inurnment was at Chico Mausoleum.

I crashed my VF on the road, I did a "how fast will she go?" test (about 215km/hr IIRC) followed by a "how quick will she stop?" test. The answer to the latter was "much faster than my VF400F single inboard ventilated disc". I locked the front wheel at ???km/hr (probably at least 160!) and hit the deck, fully leathered up so only my pride and the 750 were damaged. The poor bike landed on the right side and spun and spun; it looked like it had been attacked with hammer and angle grinder. The bike was for sale at the dealership that I worked part-time at; the boss gave me two options, pay his insurance excess (and it would certainly have been "excess") or buy the bike for a deal and then get the parts at dealer cost. He was a lovely man, I bought the bike and repaired it like new.
