Hey all, you definitely won't remember me but I was relatively active the summer of 2021 when I bought my 6th gen. Sold that in the fall and bought a BMW K1200S and rode that for a couple years. Long story short, sold the K (partially due to an accident I had last summer which didn't write it off but riding the bike just reminded me of the accident so had to let it go) and picked up a 2000 model VFR last night. Came with some beat to hell Corbin Beetle's too which I have a strange liking of. 45k-ish miles (73,500km) so not low by any means but it runs a lot better than my 6th gen did with slightly lower mileage. Not sure how many previous owners it's had but I don't get the impression that any of them were particularly nice to it. Bike is generally in good condition but the fork seals have been blown for who knows how many years and a pressure washer isn't taking the gunk (consisting of mostly way over-applied chain lube) off the back wheel and swingarm area. Will happily take any recommendations on how to get it off because degreaser is practically useless too.
I'll give that a go. The brush was working semi-effectively but didn't have a harsh enough solvent. Gas will probably work well enough. Thanks
When I was cleaning my 92 of YEARS of hard caked, gritty chain lube and road grime, there was no fucking way WD-40 on a rag would do shit. Same thing with Simple Green, regardless of the concentration. I used those things to clean up after using what finally worked. Gasoline and a tooth brush.
Clearly. This was a "new to me" bike that I don't think was ever really washed. Baked hard and had to use plastic to scrape off the first layers. Fucking laughed at me when I came at it with foaming citrus degreaser initially.
I'm not a huge "product" user, but I can tell you that Maxima chain clean and lube work wonders with minimal work...and no one is more lazy than I am. Maxima 75920 Clean-Up Chain Cleaner Maxima 77920 Synthetic Chain Guard They also have chain wax, but I don't think it is a very good product, comparatively.
Post some pics. i'm dying to see what you guys are dealing with. I've bought plenty of bikes that have never been cleaned down there and it was never much of an issue. Pull out thick gunk with plastic screwdriver. Clean the rest with WD. Super easy.
When was the last time you restored a 30 year old VFR that never had its chassis cleaned? There is STILL some baked on chain grime that is hard as a rock above the shift shaft that will get another round of GAS when I pull the exhaust.
Not sure how to post pics on here, but mine looks sorta similar, but imagine all that gunk and crap is contained to the rear wheel and swingarm area. I'll get to it some time this week or next (been pretty sick the last few days so haven't had much energy after work) but gasoline was doing pretty well for the couple minutes I tried it last night.

See it now. Format of another forum I'm on has it in the above menu where the photo icon is. I'll take some better photos later but here's what I got now. Does nothing to help but I gotta turn the bike around and need to move cars to do so. Not happening tonight.
Yeah. Not quite the Honda red but I have to admit, this kind of blue is my favourite colour. Once the filth is off, it'll show pretty well.
My red VFR is by far the ugliest motorcycle I've owned, certainly the worst (and laziest) of all of the colors any VFR has been produced in. So ugly, that my plate has the words ugly and red in it. I pay extra for that. lol
I've had a couple uglier bikes (mainly old BMW), but I'm generally not a fan of red either. Most of my ownership was spent looking for an OEM Repsol fairing kit.
