I have recently purchased my first Interceptor. It is an 87' vfr700f2. It hadn't been run in a few years so I did the usual carb clean and adjustment as well as other normal maintenance for a new bike. Once I got it on the road it didn't seem right and had a flutter of power high in rpm under heavy throttle. I have tuned and synched the carbs multiple times since then. I also have looked into an exhaust blockage but am unable to separate the pipes. Any advice on what to check and how to separate the pipes would be helpful. Thanks.

good job getting it going again. ;) great bike, dripping with quality.

OK, since you claim the carbs are good.......

pull and inspect the sparkplugs for color and consistency, gap @ about thirty thousandths. inspect plug wires and caps.

consider fitting NEW plugs (of the proper #) for another run.

also, check that the charging system output and battery voltage are proper.

pipes are usually a tough push-and-pull fight to get off......very unlikely a problem in your case unless you see big dents somewhere, no need to remove.

Why does this seem so familiar?

Anyway... good choice on a first Interceptor, for sure. Good luck!

This morning I checked my spark and it looked alright, not the best. The plugs are about 50 miles old so they are still good/look fine. I went to check my coils and did numbers 1 and 3. When I went to do the other two, the wires seemed to be on different terminals. There is a black/white wire and a colored/black wire. On 1 and 3 the black/white is on the green coil terminal and on 2 and 4 it is different, so I am not sure which is correct or if it is supposed to be like that (seems unlikely). Also, coils 2 and 4 tested to have 3.5 ohms primary resistance (spec is 2.6-3.2 according to my Clymer).

im pretty sure the black/white wires go the green, but our man, grum, is sure to know.

since your plugs are fresh and clean you should try a high-speed run and maybe a plug cut at the end to check that carbs are mixin right and not leaning out at higher speeds, causing the flutter.

So it would appear that your comments about the carbs being good were correct... I swapped wires around on my coils and it seemed better, but then the issue got much worse. After much frustration, I discovered that my number one carb bowl had much less fuel than it should. Adjusted the floats and am waiting for the auto parts store to open to get more carb clean to clean my clogged passageways. My guess is this is my issue but will keep you guys updated. I also read some ignition theory and with that and the wiring diagram, I deduced that the black/white wire does in fact go to the green.
