Still tying up some loose ends. Bought another seat to recover and put the original blue unit away.

Nice grey to go with the tank "HONDA" stickers and not look so out of place. 86/87 VFR seats are NOT FUN to recover.

2-1/2 hour wrestling match and curse session, but came out nice. An extra bump pad I got is next, she gave me some extra material when I bought the seat cover. I'll snap some better pics when I finish the pad and pull the bike out. And since this was an extra seat and the bike does not have passengers, I highly modified the rear section of the seat so the cowl fits real nice without interference.

I wanted to at least look at it on the bike before I dragged my tired, beat ass to dinner.

Looks pro Mike … I like the idea of making it a single rider mount. Hmmm
What exactly did you do ??

I'll snap some pics later. It can still technically take a passenger, but I trimmed it in on the sides and short on the rear and reshaped the foam a lot. I did something similar on the RC26 but went a little farther on this one. It REALLY helped on the RC26 with the Cobalt Racing fiberglass tail and cowl. Saving the original seat intact really gave me some freedom to start modding on something you'll never see.

Oh, sixdog. It was the seat I got from you that really drove modding it even slimmer. I was going to just run that seat for a season on this bike, but the Sargent seat cover had thick piping on the sides of the passenger portion and was installed OVER an original seat cover. It was so thick, the seat cowl wouldn't even go on, and I REALLY prefer having a seat cowl on for looks. The seat pan and foam I modded is actually that seat but I thought I might as well install the grey cover at this point. I'm saving the Sargent cover for my next RestoMod 86 750 and will trim/shape yet another seat I have.

OK, here's how I modded the seat. Probably about an inch taken off the sides and rear and then the foam blended to match, removing as much of the ducktail as possible at the rear for cowl tab clearance.

    PXL_20230719_025622784.jpg
It might not seem like a big deal, but the cowl fits SO MUCH BETTER now. And now there is zero stress on any of the tabs. And if for some emergency I must carry a passenger, I still can.

The cowl has never fit this good. Not seamless, but it's the best it can be and has nice even gaps.

Oh, and bump pads are really fucking hard to cover without wrinkles, especially one this small.

I'm really liking the color of the new seat, it goes way better with the bike than the original blue.

Godamn, I probably have 8 hours into the seat and bump, easy. Cover(s) removal, cutting, shaping and smoothing the pan, blending foam, re-covering.

    I know... I'm fuckin' crazy.

I usually go through the entire bike … replace fluids and check everything. Then again I can ride during the harsh winter months here in Southern California.

What's winter? I do nothing but charge the bikes with AGM batteries every few weeks. Generally, they ridden a bit on warmer days here.

In the old days when I lived where it snowed, I'd do the scheduled maintenance when it was cold outside. Quality fuel and run it to get any moisture out of the fuel, engine, exhaust. Top it off after. Don't store it under a tarp or other device that holds moisture in. Lube cables. Check/clean/flush brakes, tidy chain and loosen tight links. lube cables, check wheels bearings. Regular stuff.

With this many bikes I can't afford, time and money, to do all the maintenance at the same time. It has to be a rolling schedule.

For winter mode, the carbs get drained and then crank the engine full throttle with the kill switch off to clear the passages. A couple of my bikes won't crank with the kill switch off (irritating), so I have to disable the fuel pump so I'm not filling the carbs again. My bikes are in a climate controlled environment, so I'm not too worried about filling the tanks.

Pull the batteries and fill the tires to max. Lube some pivots and if I remember, apply some gear oil to the chain so it has the winter months to propagate and not fling in the Spring.

That's about it. Which is a fair amount of work, usually takes me a couple weeks to get thru them while also doing other stuff. I did the Hawk and CB-1 earlier this week.

I keep about 3 or 4 bikes going thru the Winter. ST1100, XL600R, 86 VFR750F (Guest/Rain bike). Reminds me, I need to ride the XL soon.

I have a riding rotation. 1 bike per week, currently at 4.5 runners and a minimum of 10 miles. This way they can avoid a long sit. The Aprilia is the only one without a Li battery so I tend that one every Saturday as well. My Shorai don't seem to need much and my NSR is kick start so it is more about the fuel in the carbs. Running C12.
ST1100 project is run every weekend up and down my driveway to keep fluids moving and idled until it reaches full temp. Battery tended every Saturday morning so it will start right up.
XS850 project was running until the battery gave up the ghost. I usually follow the same routine as the ST1100.

I need a rain runner. I miss riding in the rain. My bikes are all stored in a controlled environment and are borderline garage queens. lol

I raced at Portland International Raceway a couple times. One weekend was WET. I mean POURING AND BLOWING wind.

In a race on my 500 they gridded 3 classes, Super twins, Lightweight GP (my class), I can't remember exactly the other class, but they were "faster" and gridded ahead. I was in the last wave released.

5 laps. I not only passed, but LAPPED every bike but one. I was in the zone and it was surreal. My wife was listening over the radio in the Suburban with a friend. It was announced "there are white caps in turn 2!". Not an exaggeration. People were going around that lake and I was bending it in going thru! She said the announcer was going crazy! "Who is this guy?!"

It was a top 5 proud moment for me of being on a motorcycle.
