My 18 year old son, recently attempted to jump start "his" 84 VF500F from a running car and totally killed the machine. No power to anything when the key is turned to the ON position, even when connected to a known good battery

The starter relay fuses were cooked and I have new ones on the way, though I've tried jumping over the starter relay contacts with an in-line ATC-type fuse with no good result from the known good battery. I'm not very confident the story will end with a new battery and proper fuse.

I'm wondering if anyone has advice about specific areas/components I should focus on which are likely to be cooked or if I will need to start at the battery and move down the entire tree of the wiring harness to check everything(?).

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    "starter relay fuses were cooked"

Plural? Are you referring to the Main Fuse? (singular)

Assume he may have connected wrong polarity?
The two most sensitive devices to reverse polarity would be the R/R and the Spark Unit or ICM. Not too familiar with the 84.
Unplug these devices one at a time with a new fuse fitted, switch on and see if it blows!
    Good luck.
Ps. Squirrelman...not genius, not kiwi and not grom, what the hell are you smokin!

    Hi and thanks for responding.

Not plural. My fault. There was a loose spare fuse in that starter relay.

Reverse polarity is an interesting possibility. My kid says no...but my kid.

I have a fresh battery and some spare fuses now. I'll see what result I get with your suggestions.

    Thank you!

Most likley it's the R/R that's taken the hit. Any other device would take out one of the smaller amperage sub fuses not the Main Fuse.
