My guess would be the float levels are not right. Or I did not get all of the gum out of the jet openings, etc? I blew everything out and was sure I had air coming through all the places it was supposed to. They were incredibly nasty. Shame everything else is so good! I am going to look for a a bigger ultrasonic bath also. I won't be able to get back at it for a month or two now. Is there a good way to drain the carbs with out taking them off the bike again? I sure don't see that as a possibility?

Every float bowl has a flat blade screw on it right above a nipple. Dude... you just rebuilt these carbs and you didn't notice them or read about them?

Attach a tube to the nipple long enough to go to a container if you don't want to cascade furl down your engine and all over. You will need a long screw driver to get to the opposite one on each side.

It's what should be done every winter, and if done on this bike when parked wouldn't have produced such a headache in the future.

When they are all empty, flip the kill switch to off and crank the engine full throttle for a couple seconds. That sucks any fuel in jets or passages out. Ready to transport and sit.

YES, this reminds me to reveal my sad discovery [and horror] that repeated or protracted exposure to wet fuel will destroy the finish on the alternator cover and cause it to flake off in crumbs. flush with water in case of wet fuel

I certainly appreciate your help guys. I hope I can get back at the bike soon. It doesn't deserve to be in the state it is in. I absolutely can't understand how someone could leave toxic sludge in a bike for eight years? Life sometimes grabs you so you aren't paying attention to things that once were your motivators.

Wow, I just read through the whole thread and I'm bummed you didn't get it going WaveyDavey! I am facing the same issues as you (other than stuck slides) in that I am repairing my dad's 1986 VF500 that had fuel completely dry up over 30 years in storage. I'm not sure I'll be able to clean everything since the crud in the bottom of the float bowls isn't coming out with carb cleaner and brushing. I think I'll be able to get it reassembled but I'm not confident about these jets! I live in Colorado Springs so maybe you and I can have a carb building party together lol. Keep us posted on if you're able to work on the bike more, best of luck! IMG_0070.JPG

a few minutes in theultrasonic should clear most of that crud out. also clean [outdoors if possible] using toothbrush and fuel and green scotchbrite.

Mine weren't quite that bad, ultrasonic bath is the ticket, get a big enough one to fit at least one carb. I only used hot water in mine and it worked great. I was not able to get to the pilot jets so I will be taking them apart again soon. Been in limbo moving. You are going to need new float valve screens and float valves maybe. There are resources in this thread for all of the orings required courtesy of squirrelman and Capt. 80s. I have found a shop here in lakewood that has a few parts bikes. Good mechanic if you get in trouble too.

Hey Capt. Yah the move is mostly done. I am still unpacking and working. My wife is in NM while I finish my work here in Denver. I will be retiring in Feb so looking forward to that. Then I will be 100 percent in NM myself. Very excited about that! How are you?
