Hi all, I'm new to this site to a big hello to my new friends! I'm having trouble getting the carbs off my 97 model. Is there anything specific I really need to look out for? Not sure I've loosened all of the relevant fixings as it's rock solid even after loosening each of the clips on the inlets to the cylinder heads. Thank you!

Make sure all the clamps on the insulators (carb boots) are loose, both on the carb side and the engine side, 8 total. The insulators get hard over time and make getting the carbs out harder. Heat the insulators with a heat gun (on low) or hair drier to get them softer.

I often have to "lever" the carbs out on old bikes but this should be done carefully with MUCH consideration on what you are applying pressure to. Last resort and really can't be recommended to ham-fisted individuals. Be careful! A mistake will be costly.

Hi Captain 80s, thank you very much indeed!
    That all makes sense.
I need to get my hands on a hair drier now.
I really do appreciate such a quick response.
    Thank you.
    Bruce

you might as well replace the t-stat along with associated o-ring. while your in there, gen3 bikes would be similar to gen4 I would imagine. New insulator boots are a good idea, along with oem Honda rebuild kits, you need two kits for each carb, it is pricey but you get what you pay for and besides, its cheaper than buying a new bike right? I replaced the fuel rails on both of my gen3 bikes from a person on Ebay that sells custom aluminum tig welded units along with new Viton o-rings. I use these bikes weekly to go to work and they run as good as my Swiss watch I wear. Peace

That's sound advice, I'll have a look at the general condition when I'm in there. I did figure on replacing various consumables, we are talking about a 26 year old bike. Thank you ridervfr!

26 years old! It's still a puppy. Good luck with the carb job, that's quite the challenge.

Do everything under those carbs now. Not a better time and you will never have to worry about it again.

    I just did it on a 86, 92 and a 95. Plus a VF1000R and a Hawk GT.

better than a hair dryer, if you can get the engine running for a few minutes the heat will make removal easy.

Nothing is coming up for me on eBay for those fuel rails. Any more info you can provide?

you dont really need them if your OEM plastic tubes are still in good condition.

you don't need them if the tubes are ok, but I like figure "WTF" I spoke to the doode that makes them and was impressed, tried them on my 91 and ended up getting them for the 93, they come with nice viton o rings too.

Thanks for that. They look quality. I was searching fuel rails instead of tubes.
