I have a 1983 VF750f and when I bought it the tank was not stock and I think it was from a 1986 model. The tank was rotten and I tossed it out a couple of years ago. It had a smooth top and the gas cap was the type with the ring and stud's. At the time, no one seemed to be able to figure out what bike the tank was from. Today I was looking at the gas cap/ring and discovered that it is from a Yamaha bike. I am pretty sure that the tank was not from a Yamaha just the cap.

The 1986 VFR tanks appear to be very similar to my original tank. Will a 1986 tank fit on the pre-86 models?

Gas caps RARELY interchange between manufacturers.

I would think that tanks would be even more difficult to swap out. Strange.

I seem to remember that no tall the holes in the cap ring were fastened with bolts and that would make sense because the Honda has only 4 bolt holes.

It was not a 86 VFR tank. I just tried. NOT EVEN CLOSE.

The 5 hole 86 VFR cap only has three holes that actually mount to the tank, 5 - 7 - 12 clock (approx) positions. The other two are for show.

Ok - thank you so much for the help. However, I am more confused than ever. Do you know if Honda made a smooth (non humped) tank with the ring style gas cap for the early VF models?

    They did not.

Not to say somebody didn't mod a tank flat and graft in a recessed (Yamaha) cap at the same time.

Early VF750/700 tanks are getting very hard to find. Well... any worth buying. And those that are... $$$$$.
