    2000 VFR800 - Is there a go to R/R replacement brand that's closer to $100 than $200?

Agree on this.....I've seen too many guys cheap out, then a year later, they are back here asking what's wrong again.

Goto, for 5th gen? FH020aa....mounts easy with drilling 2 holes.....solder the stator wires direct to the R/Rs..... goto...

I was looking for a quality r/r recently, and I did a ton of Google searches on the topic. From everything I've seen & read, you don't want to go the cheap route on a regulator/rectifier. A lot of people are highly recommnending https://www.roadstercycle.com/. I reached out to the owner with a few questions, and he almost immediately responded with answers. I placed an order for a replacement, and it shipped out to me today (so the tracking number says). Anyhow, I hope this helps some.

Yes, its a jungle out there.... I've done an exhausting OCD google search too. Even "American" companies are just reselling china R/Rs. Two local mechanics both recommended "Ricks Regulators". Did you order a direct plug and play or kit? Price?

I ordered the Shindengen SH847 "Super Kit" (shown below). I opted for the SH847 (more pricey) over the FH020AA Mosfet, because I may swap blinkers & such in the future with LED or other non-incandescent bulbs. I've read the SH847 would be the recommended way to go in that scenario. He supposedly bench tests each unit before they ship out too, so that's added piece of mind I guess. I cannot honestly say that it's a non-Chinese made product, but it looks like our choices are slim. Hopefully this unit is made in Japan.

Roadstercycle are the go to but the OP wanted a cheaper option.
The R1 regulator just needs some leads made up and is a cheaper reliable option

I'm just in the process of using a cheap Chinese Yamaha R1 copy. I've had other bikes with dodgy R/R (Italian) and the general forum opinion has been the Yamaha R1 unit is a good option, genuine new is pricey but worth while, genuine second hand cheaper but depends how you like to play risk, Chinese copy ultimately destined for the bin with a view to replacing with a genuine unit asap, funds allowing. As mentioned does require re-wiring but its three yellow, a red and a black, pretty sure even I can't screw that up.... watch this space!

    Dooood........
The R1 R/R was the go to 10 years ago, (not saying its bad) but technology improves and changes....
Current art is series type, the Shindengen SH847 and can be purchased from Roadstercycle......It is also used as an OEM unit on several Suzukis and some Yamahas.......
As an alternate, the FH020AA is a newer MOSFET type which is like the older R1 R/R.....also available from Roadstercycle...(I'm running one)
--Shindengen damn near makes all Japanese bikes R/Rs anyhoo.....
As a community, the VFR gang probably has purchased more than 2000 of the units and no one has reported a failure...

b.When seeking advice, heed who you take it from........Yes, bad advice is still bad advice....
LOL... Thank you for that post.... Sometimes I wonder if some guys get it -[or want to]>>>.... (my lead a horse to water but cant make drink comment..)
    c. should anyone ever call themselves a guru....? -->>>> interesting question... but at the risk of jackassery....
Then, by nature, I am an introvert engineer geek foole and dislike waving my flag... but OK, most likely I am in the group of charging guru fooles....

I totally get there is a very right and very wrong way to do the job, isn't there always? My problem is cash flow, I'd love to do everything properly but I can't for various reasons. Do I know I'll have to replace the Chinese R/R in a year/month/week/day... hour?!minute?!! Yes, like I know I'll have to stump up for a new rear shock and fork rework, would I like to replace them with sexy gold plated Ohlins, you bet your ass I would. Slowly slowly, all these jobs will happen but this year I've way over spent on "recommissioning" the bike for the summer.
