Hi all, I've owned a VFR800 (VTEC A5) for about 9 years now and finally I want to modify the stock exhaust, to make it louder - too many times I've been caught in traffic and cars don't even know I'm there so I'm basically invisible!

I saw someone mod their VFR like the pictures shown - from what I can gather, they cut off the end-caps, basically cleaned out everything inside it and then it looks like they welded some perforated tubes inside to replace the original baffles inside and I think the result is some deep, throaty exhaust sounds (thanks to the tubes) and also it looks like stock, which is what I like.

Question I have is: does anyone know if the metal exhaust is aluminium? I'm not talking about the heat shields/outer caps, I mean the actual exhaust that needs welding (you can see in the pictures where they welded it). If it's steel welding then that makes life easier but I wanted to check before I embark on this project!

Also, if anyone has any tips regarding this project, please let me know! I've never modded a bike before and I know very little when it comes to tinkering with motorbikes so this will be my first mod. 01.jpg 05.jpg 06.jpg 08.jpg 09.jpg 10.jpg 11.jpg 14.jpg

    Hi
If you don't have the skills to disassemble and weld, I suggest just buying after market pipes, simple plug and play......

Hi, I have a friend who will be helping me with the mod and he's quite familiar with modding motorycles but we just needed to find out if that metal exhaust is just steel or aluminium?

    Stainless steel.
When I did mine I just cut the end cap (no 2nd cut 2/3 down ) and took everything out and welded the end back on. Not as loud as my now micron aftermarkets.
In the 2nd and 3rd pic there is actually an outer and inner shell with he baffles and dividers fixed to the inner shell, it pulls out as 1 iirc

Ah, is that what you call "gutting" the exhaust? Just literally cut the end caps off and remove everything in there that you see, then welding the caps back on so it's just hollow inside?

How did it run? I'm assuming much, much louder? Did you have to do anything like dyno or install power commander or anything or it didn't matter?

Thanks for your info and help!

It does if it helps alert drivers to my presence. Too many times drivers aren't even aware that I'm there because they aren't looking and a loud bike always alerts them.

    Yep, hollow inside.
I had a spare stock exhaust so I said "f it, just give it a go"
From what I remember it had a deep sound, not raspy and not as loud as my microns and definitely not as loud as WiLD Headers and microns
No dyno and I still haven't got around to dyno with the WiLD's. I do have a Rapidbike connected though

So loud and deep enough to get noticed. No dyno but no issues running the bike gutted either. Seems like a good option.

You might be surprised at how decent it sounds.
I had ordered the microns before I did this and got the gutted ones back on before the microns turned up and almost tempted to cancel the order.
Good luck if ya do go ahead
