1986 VFR750 - Talk Me Out Of It...

    Now that I'm done the VF, at squirrelman's suggestion, prodding, whatever, I found a clean VFR nearby.

    Other than the cam drive being different, what are the other high points and low points of these bikes???? Some things to look out for when I go take a look at it in a few days?

    I'm in need of another bike like I need a kick in the head but..........my name is Tony and I have a motorcycle problem......

    hard to get bits for - why not try the later gen 750 - all its soft cams etc are no longer a problem...

    Unless it is missing or needing bodywork, they are a joy. Very reliable and lots of personality. Can be modded pretty easily for wide wheels and modern rubber.

    The stator wires connector can melt (eliminate the plug and solder). Also the plug on the starter solenoid can melt, but not as common. A few people have reported cracked starter clutch housings, but I haven't experienced it.

    I love my 86s.

    gofer it !

    a great engine, fine handling (with good tires) and more visceral and mechanical than later, more refined models. intoxicating gear wine.

    easy to work on.

    Bike has been well cared for by PO for the last 18 years, been in storage for 5 however and he says it could used a carb clean. No damage anywhere, bike is in good shape otherwise, has just over 60,000km on the clock.

    Just found a well worn looking '91 for cheap but it appears to need slightly more elbow grease to turn it into a runner - has 80,000km on this one.

    Big question now is: is there a significant change other than the swingarm between 86 and 91?

    ^^^ engine improvements for durability, heavier, better wheels and tires, much harder to readjust valves if they need it.

    $500 less for the 91 but it seems like it needs more work.

    don't buy the '91 if it's missing the coolest part..........the sidestand cover.

    I legitimately thought you were jerkin' my chain for a minute, like telling the new guy to go get a jug of propwash, or some blinker fluid, a roll of flight line etc.

    I'll be damned...it's actually a thing, now I HAVE to look at it!
