Anybody ever gone into Canada from the US, and had to show more than just their ID? I heard crossing with a bike, is a little more strict, than crossing with a car.

I was told by my insurance company that I can be insured at no additional charge, for 30 days at a time in Canada, and they (insurance company) will send me out a Canada insurance card.

    Anybody? Bueller?

This is the last year you can cross with just your valid drivers license. Once it is 2008 you have to have your passport. I crossed over and back in June and had no issues, but the US border patrol officer was a little touchy when I did not have my passport. He said they like to see them even though they are not required at the moment.

    Hope this helps!

I just went from the US to Canada and back about a month ago, and if you only have your driver's license or ID, they might give you a very hard time. The Canadian lady was furious with me, and the US guy bitched me out and just about wanted a blood sample to let me in. I would not recommend it.

Bottomline....I HIGHLY recommend having your passport, or at the very least, both your driver's license and birth certificate. Two forms of ID at the least, but passport would be perferred. Why have the hassle, ya know?

BTW, never had anymore trouble of crossing with a bike than a car. Might make you take off your helmet though.

    They nailed it above -

B-4 '08 best to have a passport, but a current license & a certified (not a copy) of a Birth certificate will work good on both sides.

'08 on a Passport is a must, & it's taking on average 6 months to get one

living in Buffalo, just across the river from Canada, i cross frequently with only questions like where you going,. how long will u be in canada, are you bringing anything in. last time i was asked if i had anything along "for my personal protection?"
jeesus, that's personal! i thought at first she was asking about condoms!! instead, it was a euphemistic, roundabout way to ask if i was carrying a firearm!!!

it's actually easier to cross on a bike than a car....they know you don't have a trunk full of immigrants or pot!

don't let people cow you into thinking u need a passport yet; people still have freedom to travel as a US citizen!

    Squirrelman,

I would have yielded to the temptation to ask her if personal protection meant condoms and asked if they were required. Perhaps you could have said, "Why? Are condoms required for entry into Canada? I'm really embarrassed that you would ask that."

Just about then they would be breaking out the rubber gloves for the FULL BODY cavity search performed by some fat dude. I don't joke much with those guys, just be nice and that is it. My dad got a full body cavity search because he was a smart ass, however, he also got this inspector guy in trouble...long story.
