Wheel Hugger? Is a good thing or a waste of money?

I have never owned a bike with a wheel hugger. Who has, and is the price an advantage to buy? I know I am a mostly fair weather rider, but we do get caught up in weather. Is water & crud really getting into the rear shock other wise. That would be the only reason for me to buy one. Shocks are costly. I would expect some protection from honda on the bike like that rubber flap. Let me know.

I've used huggers for ages, we get plenty of rain and it really does keep the shock clean as well the rest of the bike, I think it keeps the chain clean too, the reduction in spray is noticeable and your bike will be so much cleaner

It does help to keep the underside of the rear of the bike a bit cleaner in wet weather. The flap does work to an extent.

 

Looks cool enough. But I have over 210,000 km on mine and ride it year round in torrential rain fall, salt and sand on the highways and every other shit conditions you can think of. Even got caught in the snow a couple times. I have replaced the rear shock and rebuilt the fronts once in the life of the bike. I get reasonable life on my chain. Yes, everything gets dirty but everything gets cleaned as well. I don't mean detailed clean but just cleaned. If you like to looks, fly at her. If you are expecting great savings on your chain and shocks, then you are just spending money.

BTW. Chilliwack's average annual rainfall is 1680 mm / 66". We do get wet.

 

I bought the HONDA version - but I seldom ride in the rain or any type of weather other than 65+ degrees. It does help keep the tar and road gunk from hitting the tail or rear suspension - but to Randy's point - don't expect an amazingly clean rear after install.

 

I had the dealer fit the Honda version before I collected it. It's not perfect but it does help, if it didn't all the grit I wash off the inside of it when I take the wheel out would otherwise go onto the swingarm, shock etc.

 

I just got one from Ermax, color match is pretty good, I mostly got it for looks but I do notice it helps minimize road water spraying on the backs of my legs when I have the side cases on.
