Help! Slider removal.

I’m not sure what type of sliders these are they came with the bike. I can’t find any socket that fits inside the slider big enough to to grab the bolt so I can take than darn thing off . The 14mm is too big to fit inside the slider and the 13mm is too small to grab the bolt inside! I tried to take the coolant reservoir off but the hole is too small to pull it off over the slider so I can see what’s behind it. Grrrr! Any help would be appreciated.

 

I’d take a disc cutter to the slider ...

 

That’s an idea. The left side was scratched up anyway. I’d rather do it the “right way” but if it comes to that, I’d do it.

 

Are those 12-point sockets? Might have a thinner wall or may be a standard bolt in there

Are they American made, might not be metric?

 

I’ve tried both 6 and 12 point sockets metric and standard. All are either too big to fit inside the slider or too small to grab the bolt. I’ve tried to turn the entire slider possibly to loosen the bolt that way. No luck.

 

I’ve looked at about 40 sliders and they look like R&G sliders so I’ve looked at the installation instructions and of course they don’t say what size the bolt is. Anyone with R&G sliders know what the bolt size is?

 

According to the Honda diagram it’s #23 which is a 10mm bolt and it’s not a 10mm bolt now. Still no answers...

 

That isn't an R&G slider, looks like something someone cobbled up. It should be mounted on the throughbolt of the top, front, engine mount. The bolt should be an M10. The R&G's are actually mounted on a rod, threaded for M10 on both ends, with a washer and a nut on both ends. The R&G nuts are 17mm, IIRC. R&G's also replace the entire overflow tank. Just cut it off. A machine shop can spin one up out of a piece of Delrin rod.

 

Does the bolt go through the engine and frame? Maybe there's a nut on the other side

It isn't an R&G kit, if it's attached at the upper, back, motor mount. Not sure what you have. Might just be some spools that someone spun up on a lathe and then attached with a longer motor mount bolt. Might have to get creative to get to the bolt, if a socket won't fit. I remember seeing a kit (long, long time ago now) that required drilling the overflow tank and gluing in a piece of pvc pipe, but the name escapes me now. It could be that someone just copied the design and hacked one together. I would start by cutting the slider off at the overflow tank to shorten it, then use a reamer in a rotary tool to enlarge the hole to allow getting a socket on the bolt head.

 

Definitely not 17mm.

 

It’s looking like that’s the plan. Who ever did this little project to the bike didn’t think it through very well. The slider has to come off.

 

Hex head bolt. Unsure of the size but it’s not 10. Probably a 14 but I can’t get the 14 inside the slider. Geez this is a PITA.

I don’t have that brand but I do have thin wall 14 and it doesn’t fit. It must have came with a specific tool for install/removal but there isn’t a name brand on it anywhere. I reached out to the very nice guy I bought it from and haven’t heard back yet. Thanks for all your help and ideas my friends.

 

Could they be made by Radar? It's a hole through the coolant reservoir design but the hole shown in this thread is in a different spot?

Try a thin walled socket

 

Exactly what I was thinking - low quality socket sets often make up for poor quality metal by making the socket wall thicker - most times that does not matter but in this case you may need to find a nearby hardware store and just ride the bike over and ask them to raid their display to help you track down a suitable socket.

It also looks like you could need to look for a deep reach socket if the bolt/nut is a long way down inside that slider.

I am certain from that coolant reservoir lash-up is not an R&G slider.

Finally is there any chance those bolts are not metric - perhaps AF.

 

Does the slider rotate on bolt? Is it possible the slider is molded with a hex recess to aid in tightening the bolt.
