    Hi Guys and girls,

I recently bought a 5th gen vfr800 in quite a good condition. Completely stock .
Bike has been put away 10 years ago and hasn't been ridden much since.

At this stage i'm doing some small repairs so it will run even more smootly as it runs now. I will be doing below:
    -NEW BALL HEAD BEARINGS
    -NEW OIL + FILTER
-NEW COOLANT - FLUSH SYSTEM (I'M DOUBTING IF I WILL REPLACE THERMOSTAT ASWELL)
-NEW THERMO SWITCH FAN (DOESN'T COME UP SO I BELIEVE ITS BROKEN)
    -NEW FORK OIL + GASKETS
-NEW FRONT - REAR WHEEL BEARINGS
-NEW GASKETS IN THE FRONT BRAKES AND NEW BRAKE PADS AS THEY BITE TO MUCH, I MIGHT REDO THE REAR BRAKE ASWELL
-NEW AIRFILTER (IM DOUBTING IF I WILL BUY A K&N OR IF I WILL STICK WITH OEM)
-BLINKING BREAK LIGHT AND STRONGER HEADLIGHT
-INSTALL 12V SOCKET WITH INTEGRATED VOLTAGE METER

My rectifier still works ok, but i think it is still the original one. I don't get any strange reading on the multimeter but the plug was somewhat corroded so i cleaned this one and put some petrol jelly around it.

If i'm stuck with something you will hear me in the technical section :).

I hope to have all this things solved by April,
as I'm having two other projects aswell this winter (leathercraft + black powder shooting).

    BRGDS,
    Jeroen

Welcome! Sounds like a similar list I'm using for my recently acquired Gen5... before you replace the rad fan temp sensor, take the side fairings off and check the coolant level.... mine was low by a lot and the reservoir was empty. I am surprised there is no relay in that circuit.....

    Hi RaYzerman,

I already flushed my cooling system and changed the coolant.
I was hoping that this would be sufficient but it wast ..

Welcome to The World! I've been to Belgium once but that was 20+ years ago though, I'm sure the beer is just as good today as it was back then! More for this forum though, how's the riding over there?

Hi Jeroen and Welcome to the Forum:Welcome:

It sounds like your 5th Gen is being given a thorough refresh. Certainly having your own bike lift should make sorting ou the bike a lot easier.

If the VFR has mostly been parked for 10 years you should check the date codes on the tyres. Even if they still have plenty of tread there is a risk with really old tyres delaminating with no warning which is certainly nothing you want to happen at top speed on the autoroute.

    Take care - ATGATT

    Hi OOTV,
Thanks for the welcome, sure the beer is still fine, I actually live about 5 miles of a very famous abbey (westmalle) and 3 miles of a good honda bike parts dealer :)! Its handy but costly.
Riding in Belgium, well... After riding in the Alps and other beautifull parts in Europe, Belgium isn't that fun.

    Hi Atgatt,

I will replace the tires aswell as they are about 15 years old and they are hard as a rock. I won't replacing them myself but i've found a shop that pulls on tires and balances the wheel for €12. If you bring your own tires he charges €17. I have put tires on on my africa twin earlier, but this VFR turns out to be something more sophisticated :O. I have never saw so much hoses onder a tank as with this one. My africa twin had 2. 1 fuel and 1 overflow

I'm almost done with my repairs, it took longer then expected due to work, other projects, waiting for spares and now the country lockdown.
    So far i did below:
    -NEW BALL HEAD BEARINGS
    -NEW OIL + FILTER
-NEW COOLANT - FLUSH SYSTEM - replaced the thermostate aswell, it was ok, i didn't had a new seal for the thermostat housing. And guess what? It isn't leaking. I know i will only have this luck once in a lifetime :).
-NEW THERMO SWITCH FAN (DOESN'T COME UP SO I BELIEVE ITS BROKEN) - it was broken so i changed it, but as this is easily accessible and this isn't a super crutial part i bought one from Aliexpress, with same temp range and so far it workes perfect.
-NEW FORK OIL + GASKETS - i didn't as they were still fine
-NEW FRONT - REAR WHEEL BEARINGS - i didn't as they were still fine
-NEW GASKETS IN THE FRONT BRAKES AND NEW BRAKE PADS AS THEY BITE TO MUCH, I MIGHT REDO THE REAR BRAKE ASWELL - i ended up rebuiling the complete front brakes i fucked up once so i had to replace a piston aswell. Now i'm still missing some pressure in my rear brake but this will be fixed this week i hope.
-NEW AIRFILTER (IM DOUBTING IF I WILL BUY A K&N OR IF I WILL STICK WITH OEM) - i used an OEM for this
-BLINKING BREAK LIGHT AND STRONGER HEADLIGHT - the breaking light i got from aliexpress (as it is easily accesible and works great) i didn't improve the head lights yet
-INSTALL 12V SOCKET WITH INTEGRATED VOLTAGE METER- i installed a 12V socked and i chose a sepperate volt meter (aliexpress aswell), it is wired but i want to have it turned on by a relay so this one is yet to arrive (aliexpress aswell).

My rectifier still works ok, but i think it is still the original one. I don't get any strange reading on the multimeter but the plug was somewhat corroded so i cleaned this one and put some petrol jelly around it. - After test running this rectifier gets super hot and the plugs are getting a yellow brouwnish tint of the heat aswell. I don't get that good figures so before this piece of crap takes my stator with it i installed a mosfet built in the netherlands https://www.carmo.nl/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4318_1083_1086&products_id=2783

Yes things this side of the pond are expensive but I too would not take the risk of a cheapo RR wrecking an expensive stator. Sometimes cheap means avoid!

I guess in Belgium, you are now grounded until this virus outbreak peters out and travel restrictions are lifted.

I have just cancelled my plans to go to the Isle of Man TT and a long planned trip to Norway in mid June is looking increasingly doubtful, especially given the way the number of deaths in France is spiralling upwards here. A worrying trend is that half of all critical patients here are under 60, with many well under. It seems it is not just old folks at risk.

I fear that it will be late autumn before I will be allowed to take my VFR out for a run. So with nothing better to do it gives me time to give the motorbikes a decent clean and check-over.

    Take care

Jup i'm only allowed to leave the house for groceries, work and to walk the dog, and the dog must be walked in the vicinity of the house. Number of deaths is increasing here exponentially aswell.

As i'm working in the martime shipping i'm one of the lucky onces who don't need to be affraid to lose their job, altough i see a decrease in the oil trade due to the low price so there are fewer vessels here. I expect in a few weeks we will have roughly 30-40% less vessel calls.

My holliday plans are only in July so i hope by then this is all over and I can go to Cannes and ride the route Napoleon again :).

I still need to install my hepco and becker case rack and buy hepco and becker cases.

Hadn't you considered the Honda RR then (in other words why did you choose to buy this carmo one) ?

my original was faulty it took, and i have to admit it already made the plugs brownish so mayby this was the reason this carmo rectifier fried it.
I did mount the new rectifier on a heat sink plate i got from the Far East.
