Good to know Pete. I spent a couple of months around the Manchester, Liverpool and Bolden I think it was? Just needed a holiday. Rented a bedroom in a flat that two roommates had available in Bolden. I can’t believe that during that time I failed to visit the Isle of Mann track. The internet scene is pretty fun and I sure like the way British chicks dress. Bangs do it for me. Bwahahaha.
Honestly I had a spectacular stay. One night all three of we’re going to be at the flat and I said, “You guys don’t eat dinner, I’m cooking tacos. “ They rally hadn’t eaten TexMex style Mexican food which is pretty dang good. So, I went to the store, always had fun at the checkout because I have a pretty thick Southern accent and somebody would strike up a convo. Anyway John and Erick loooooved the tacos and beer. I couldn’t understand a word they were saying. LOL.

Don't worry about it - if I go to Liverpool I don't understand them either - lol

The 04 rr design still has life. This is the fun part since the chassis and motor are complete.
I am pretty much decided on this for track. The lowers will be narrowed slightly at the bottom seam.
In one of those pics is an 04rr fuel tank. The top won’t change. The bottom will be cut off and sealed. Pared down to 2 1/2 gallons is just right. A long aquatinted friend/VFR purist, said he liked it. I’m going to go with a red seat. That’s just a towel. The uppers won’t change much and are the same color.

    More Later.

EDE5C7C8-C16B-4383-96EC-CF245AB20A1C.jpeg Have all of the fairings but the upper. The fitment is going well. The frame and engine are really dirty. It’s looking more “streety “ daily. I tend to remake all of the brackets wit aluminum and will share with you the process. 9B404FEF-D446-49D3-B977-EFE97D7087B6.jpeg
Four main points of mounting bolt right up. That’s half the battle.

We will be trying to graft the bottom section of the original fuel tank to the top of the '04 fuel tank. Would like to keep the base of the original for mounting purposes. IMG_1159.JPG IMG_1161.JPG

Are you cutting the tank with sheet metal shears ?
The cut is very rough-looking. A abrasive wheel would make a cleaner cut, but make sure no fuel in tank due to sparks from wheel.
Thanks for posting pictures of the build.

    hi Brian,

Looks like I chewed it off doesn’t it. I use a disk on a grinder. The hack looking edge came from several tries of positioning the top section of the tank to fit to the old bottom and I’m just a hack. The metal is soft and I’ve bent it several times to get a good fit. I knew this would be difficult. You should have seen the fitment process for the radial brake hangers! LOL I may make a 2 gallon aluminum tank and simply put a hose from the top section to the tank. Since the top of the 04 tank has to snug up to the cover, it has presented many challenges. The height has to be within a 1/32” to look and function properly. I first tried to cut down an old rusty tank and graft the new one on top. The old tank has a flare out at the base and the 04 cover would not fit over it. So I cleaned off the base of the old tank to use as a guide and this will keep the integrity of Honda’s build ideas. 673D2087-6148-490B-8DDD-CBF985C8F20D.jpeg

there’s also the vent tubes and petcock. The cardboard model is about two gallons and would be fashioned out of aluminum plate. I’m almost certain it’s the road that I’ll travel.

made a small grinding station to keep the dust contained. Sometimes you have to take a step back and think about it. I know you are wondering why I didn’t just cut the bottom off of the 04 tank and seal the bottom. The depth of the 04 tank simply wouldn’t fit in that space. I don’t use a fuel pump. An old Honda wrench that worked with the race team stated that they took the fuel pumps off of the race bikes. Gravity feed is all you need. It’s true. Testing at the track showed no signs of power loss. There’s a duel outlet Pingel valve that flows great installed. I think a 600 tank uses the same cover. Maybe the tank is thinner. Lots of options out there.
    But for now..... BE6B8453-6475-4DF2-938D-91477B7128F4.jpeg

I wanted to put everyone’s mind at ease about the fuel tank. I do have experience with fuel tanks and I have experienced a bad gasoline fire in this very garage. I am extremely cautious and if at any time I believe that this section of the build is over my head, I WIILL farm out the fuel tank build. I don’t hurry the important sections of a build, ie: I don’t consider paint and body important. The radial brakes took the better part of a year to complete and I was guided by some very skilled machine-worthy instructors and what to look for during testing. Instructions for disassembly and even looking for stress fractures under a microscope. I’m not writing this because someone asked or posted a question. I want people to post questions! Question and answer is how we all learn to do things “correctly”. All race teams of any caliber are testbeds of information of what works and what breaks under stress. Again thanks for the questions and I’ll go into more depth with the testing procedures when the build is complete. We still have a long way to go. I already have several local guys asking when this VFR will be complete. I expect we will put it in some local shows at the school too. Much more to come as the fitment process is in full swing.

The upper came in from paint. We need a clear low shield but for now this one came with the plastics. 2B0DE6F1-11DA-466A-A7F5-7F1F02360CD5.jpeg 1D36E710-316C-49D2-A036-2B8F70C0F16D.jpeg

Pictures don’t do it justice. The color is bright and the clear is very glossy. From white to red. We’ve come a long way. Suspension, tires, clipons, front brakes, bodywork, carbs, engine run in, etc. Time to disassemble, build brackets, clean frame and engine, chain conversion and finish the fuel tank. Paint inside of fairing black, seat build, raise rear an inch, decals and finally a track day in April. Convert to street and start on a Triumph 675. Much more to come!

Found an 07 rr seat. It was 68 degrees today in Norman OK D5A4BC93-65CF-4A65-A223-A57327AA0EF1.jpeg 41305BA8-3160-4C1D-A2C0-4CD04BE336AB.jpeg 0

looks like the forks are raised too much, shouldn't be more than about 10mm ??

Squirrelman! Dude if you’re following this thread, I’m honored. Yes the forks are a little far up. The suspension bits from Jamie are so good, the forks only have about 2” of travel and the rear shock needs about 3/4” rise for it to give me the clearances needed for the track. I really wish you could try out this suspension. The rear clearance has recently been raised and I have just received the silicone brass tig brazing rod needed for the fuel tank. My school is closed this week for the COVID-19 issue and I expect to have the fuel tank sorted by Wednesday. I’ll slide those tubes down a bit this week.

to add: I was digging through some spare parts and found a baffled chrome exhaust tip that will work nicely for the track. It’s short but I like the looks of it (not pictured yet). It will also show off the rear wheel.
