Well done Jim, my valve spring compressors are now at 35 years old & were about the same price then..

certain jobs you dont need a pro tool if its infrequent use.
    Keep the updates coming..

Yep, keep it cheap! I think I am in for about $800.00 including the price of admission. That is a pretty nice rig job going on there!

Need some advice regarding engine case sealant. I have used HondaBond in the past. I searched around and the interwebs say that it the same as Permatex Ultra Grey. Is this true? If not what is the word on sealant these days?

    Hondabond.

I've heard that about the permatex too but my friend thought it still had a silicone quality about it and didnt like it. But Im sure it would work just fine.

ThreeBond 1184 is a true Hondabond equivalent.

I have to agree with your friend on that. It seems to be silicone. I wish Threebond was more readily available around here, I think I will go to the Stealership and get the Hondabond.

    Is Yamabond the same also?

Need some advice again. I am installing the rings on the pistons and cannot figure out which ring goes in the 1st and 2nd ring groove.
I understand the "R" on the ring goes up. The issue is the Helms manual shows the 2nd ring to have an angle cut on the OD. I cannot see this on the ring set I got. The only differences is one of the rings has a silver ring around it and the other does not. See pictures.

Isn't that "silver" ring the bevel cut?

Made some big progress today. Had to stop because the gasket kit from Japan did not come with the oil pump orings!!! Another order to BikeBandit!

So... did you decide that was the bevel?

And the oil pump can be installed at anytime.

    Nice progress!!!

Awesome! It is not too hard if you have an OEM Manual. At least you will be able to get parts a lot easier than on this '86. Nothing comes easy on this bike.

    Thanks!
I had another set of eyes look at it and it appears the "Dark" or non-silver ring was the bevel cut. The bevel was so subtle as to be almost non existent.

I am NOT 100% sure this was correct for future reference. I hope I did the right thing! I will know when I start it up (I think).

IMG_9582.JPG IMG_9584.JPG More progress! Got the cams timed. Still sweating it out as this is something you CANNOT get wrong. Rolled it over several times and checked and it is still in time. No way to be sure until it starts!

If you are methodical, it is impossible (but very easy!) to get it wrong. Make sure you follow the updated procedure in the manual.

I had a phase when I was doing the timing on all my VF500 engines. Really enjoyed doing it. Something satisfying seeing it all come together.

It looks like I got the timing right, adjusted the valves and nothing crashed as I turned it over several times by hand. YAY!

Just need to get my oil pump orings and I can button 'er up and put it in the frame. Big job almost over! IMG_9585.JPG
