Have a chance to pick up a 2000 model Yellow bike (are they more collectible than the Red?)

Mileage is 30K. Includes rear cowl and in good condition.

No tipovers and bodywork looks good.

What should I be on the lookout for ?

What would be a good price to pay ?

    Thanks

The market is weird for these bikes. I've seen clean looking 5th gens on craigslist stay up for months and months before disappearing. With a reasonable asking price too, something like $2000-$2500.

The condition of the bike should be the biggest factor in price. I messed up when I got mine, and I've had to spend a ridiculous amount of time cleaning all the dust and grime off it while replacing the thermostat and all the cooling hoses. If the seller has extensive service records, then I would take that heavily into account.

I would check all the regular stuff (tires, bakes, general cleanliness, etc), then check the thermostat (during a cold start), and hook up a multimeter to check charging voltage. Not sure there's much else you can check without removing parts, so that's where the service records come into play. If the seller lets you, try to lift the tank and see how clean/dirty it is under there.

Personally, I wouldn't pay more than $1500 for a bike that had obviously not been maintained or stored properly. I would go as high as $3500 though for one that was (and includes service records). I'm curious what others here think.

From my perspective, a 5th gem. VFR with 30K on the clock is a practically new engine. I have 70K or so on mine, and it is a fantastically reliable daily ride, with performance to spare. Unless VERY abused, a VFR with that kind of mileage could be worth all of $3500 here in California. Little things could make a difference in price (tires, brake pads, broken parts).

Sounds like you found a solid example, but ask about the intake boots. I recently replaced all vacuum hoses because one was cracked from age. In the process I replaced all coolant hoses, cleaned up the WAX cold idle unit, and realized the intake boots had to be replaced too. Because I can do all my own work, it was about $90 in parts. Labor would have been at least 5 hours. When buying a used bike, those kinds of questions can help with haggling a price.

    Someone was watching....

One just popped up on this forum's Classifieds section.

    Original owner, 16.5K miles.....

Personally, I love the 2000. Fills me with happiness, just owning it. The riding adds to that, a bunch!
