OEM Hard Case Issue

    Guys,

    Bought the OEM hard luggage for my bike. During my recently completed road trip the right case became partially detached at the rear hook (attached photo is a representation). This caused the bottom of the case to bang against the exhaust end cap causing some damage. There's also some damage to the attach point on the bike. My question to all those who own the OEM luggage-have you encountered the same issues, and what remedy did you do?

    I'm hoping Honda warranty's their accessories. I have submitted an enquiry to American Honda, and await their response.

    If the damage annoys you, it won't be the big cost to replace that exhaust ring. On the other hand, I have the original OEM cases. Provided the rubbers are correctly mounted, I don't see any chance, if you fixed the luggage correctly (so : also pushing down the luggage's handle down), how the L/R case(s) can jump out of their locations (as that seems to have been the case, if I understand it correctly)... Just a silly question : maybe the luggage's weight was a little high ? But even then, it seems to me there would be parts that would break off rather than have the cases slip out of their fittings.

    I have been using the factory cases for more than a year and have never had this problem.

    Mine has had the cases since new and I have done goodness now how many thousands of miles with them on and not a mishap. I could suggest 2 things.

    Operator error. ie not put on correctly, such as slotted in place with the locking handles in the up position and left that way. Because they wont move once the handles are down.

    or your missing the black rubber on the rear of the pillion pegs, but that would only cause it to flap about a bit.

    You probably missed that hook tab because once’s it’s on there and handle push down, it’s not moving

    Guys, I promise you. I was very careful in installing the cases. After the first unlatch event. I even shimmed the recess where the retractable latch inserts so the case clamps on a little firmer, but to no avail. Honda have already got back to me. I plan to visit my dealer who sold me the cases to see if we can resolve this.

    I can only think of a broken/malfunctioning fixation mechanism, then ( = the raising part not properly closing - i.e. not raising enough - when pressing down the pannier's lever)

    Update: My cases have been replaced under warranty. Compared to the old cases there is a more positive engagement of the latch when you close the handles. The cases are more secure on the bike. It's as if the latching system clamps with more authority. Top marks for my local dealer for taking care of this. Now getting my damaged parts replaced by Honda is proving to be more bureaucratic than necessary. I have a work assignment that keeps me out of town for 6 weeks. I'll have to pick this up when I get back home.

    OK, I'll bite. I just put mine on....no instructions.... I put on my rubber buggy baby bumpers like in this photo. I have no idea where the reflectors go unless I am suppose to screw them into the rear of the panniers.....my mounts seem secure. ;) vfr pannier 1.JPG

    Thanks! Who knew? The first link worked wonderfully and I downloaded the PDF. They addressed everything but the reflectors.....The main thing is I have the rubber buggy baby bumpers on correctly. Love these panniers. Just as good as my FJR ones....

    I noticed there are 2 versions around at the time I was adapting my panniers's inner key cylinders. I bet it's this one you need (see attachment). In that one, the reflectors are mentioned indeed !!!

I never received the reflectors with my panniers nor the rubber mounts, have since purchased the rubber mounts but used reflective tape on the rear of the panniers instead of the reflectors. And yes I went a little overboard.

    Hi , sorry for the late post, I’m new to VFRW. I have had the same issue on my 2014 this past summer. Do you know what Honda did to fix it? I’ll likely have to it myself since it’s a 2014 (no warranty anymore). Thanks

    I returned my cases to the Honda dealer I bought them from, and they replaced them under warranty. I hope history won't repeat itself as I won't be using my replacements until the late spring/summer of next year. As for home repair, I can only suggest you shim the part of the case that contact's the carrier on the bike. This will result in more closing force required to latch the case on the bike-good luck.
