Fuel Tank Flow issues

    So I recently acquired a 86' vf1000r. It has sat for quite some time. The gas tank has corroded on the inside and i plan to use muriatic acid to strip the rust on the inside of the tank. However, I have rinsed the inside of the tank and no liquid flows out of the fuel line hook up at the bottom of the tank. I have turned the petcock to on, off and, reserve and have not been able to get anything flow out of the tank. Is it clogged with rust? I am able to blow air in it and it feels like it goes through to the tank. How can i get liquid to flow through the tank?

    If the tank was full of rust, and you opened the petcock, you prolly got a bunch of rust in it. Probably would have been better to just remove the petcock. My guess is that it's a moot point, if the tank is that bad, the petcock was prolly trashed anyway. Petcocks are still available from Honda, around $40 + shipping. 16950-MB2-013

    How do I go about replacing the petcock in the gas tank?

    Remove the petcock lever, by removing the screw in the hole in the center of it, extract the trim from the tank to get to the petcock mounting bolts, there are two, remove these, pull off the petcock. at a minimum, you will need a new sealing gasket, also still available from Honda. 16958-MB4-005, about 4 bucks + shipping

    After i pull this off and expose the 3 holes. How will that help to get flow out of the fuel nozzle at the bottom of the tank?

    the elemental force of gravity and liquid head should force fuel from the holes. if that isn't good use compressed air

    For some reason I have found that the 1000R tanks don't like to just "flow" when you select on or reserve. They like some kind of "pull" to get things started. I think it's the nature of the internal plumbing. Sometimes 86 VFR750/700 will do the same thing for me.

    But those are clean normal tanks. Yeah, recommend some compressed air to verify open passages.
