so go ahead and reset them as close as possible to .005". much easier and quicker on your bike than later bikes. there is a possibility some valves were damaged by the lack of clearances. be sure to use a box-end wrench to loosen the adjuster locknuts.

don't fret too much about exact crank alignment since u know that clearance can be measured at any point where the lobe is NOT pressing on the pad. also, at any crank position you can check one intake and one exhaust clearance.

 

Yeah,, that moment when garage gnomes (kids) raid your garage and take the 10mm wrench from its perfect resting place. Now setting clearance will have to wait till tomorrow.

Yeah I'm puling for the bike also, I have little to no money in it, No loss to me just sad for the bike and then if it is fubar I have to decide repair, replace or sell out.

 

I don't need little rascals...I'm quite good of thinking too far ahead, start one thing, then get the crow shiny thing going and start fussing with something else. Next thing I know, I'm half done with three things and running in place. I literally stop everything I'm doing, clean up, and start over. When I am spending more time looking for things, rather than making any real progress, it's time to punt. Can only blame it on myself.

 

got all intake set to .005 or as close as I can

Dry-1:140 2:90 3:160 4:140
Wet-2:150

didn't bother wet testing 1,3 or 4 since adjusting clearance they look good.

So.... thoughts?

 

I'd say you at least have something to work with. Came around pretty decent. I would say it would be worth a little effort to get it running at this point.

 

get it running and check #'s again after running a few miles.

Heck yea, pretty excited since this is the condition I found the bike in. sitting in some old country boys yard rotting. See the other bike, no clue what it was, rotting in the back ground also.

I’ll have to source a complete used set. Too many Little issues with this set. Feebay has 3 different sets from a 1987 vfr750 between $100-$600. Anyone one of theses will work, correct?

 

Any 86 or 87 VFR carbs will work. Try to get non-California to make it easier (less vent hose plugging), but either will work.

That $100 set looks usable. The $164 dollar set are Cali.

It's a bummer everyone insists on removing the plenum, there is a chance one of the fuel tubes could be cracked if it wasn't removed carefully. Especially if it was removed prior to extracting the carbs from the engine.

 

Finally carbs ordered. They'll be in next week and here is another surprise I found given to me from the PO, another custome job like the carbs. So looks like a SSSS is in the future. LOL just kidding. Replacing with stock arm is just fine.

I don't know him but what a story to tell if I can get this bike running, the condition it was found it, the valve clearance at "0", the copper fitting jammed in the carbs and now the swing arm custom modification....LOL...
