Another Charging System Thread

    On my 4th Gen, I eliminated connector, added some grounds, CPU fan, thermal paste and things are looking a lot better.

    I have added a voltmeter, by tapping into one of the turn signal running lights to monitor voltage(though there's a voltage drop there, than battery terminals, but better than nothing).

    Yesterday, one of the bulb went out for low beam in the headlight, both work on high beam.

    Now question is, when I am riding at 5K rpm or high, it's showing 13-13.2V, moment or second I come to a stop or idle, it shows 13.5-13.7 V. If I tun on high beams, voltage becomes erratic, anywhere from 13-13.7V.

    Is it normal or have anything to do with headlight? Thanks for any help :)

    Ideally you should have a dedicated connection to the battery. In that way you will eliminate fluctuations in voltage caused by other electical uses.

    Regarding the voltage readings: the stock RR on mine had simalar readings with a higher reading at idle than above 4k. At the higher rps the charging system could not rise above 13.2v. After replacing the RR with a used unit from a Yamaha R1 the Voltages are 13.8v at idle and 14.2-14.5v at speed.

    I purchsed mine from a breaker on fleabay. It was taken off of a 2012 Yamaha FZ8. As I understand it, it is the same as the R1.

    You should start by doing "The Drill", post #9 in the following thread. https://vfrworld.com/threads/how-to-fix-common-regulator-stator-failures.39277/

    Do "The Drill" before you spend $$ on parts. It sounds very similar to what my bike was doing, so I suspect it is the RR. "The Drill" will make sure. You may want to do it twice. First with a cold engine, and then after a short ride to see if the output of the stator changes after it is hot.

    I bought my replacement RR from Jack at Roadstercycle and have been very happy with the purchase. I replaced the stock RR preemptively so I wouldn't get stranded on boonie rides. I believe it's a good investment in peace of mind and Jack's prices are more than fair.
