Bike died at stop light today out of the blue:eek: , I am thinking it has something to do with the charging system. Has anybody had problems like this before? Any suggestions?:frusty:

Search under RR, R/R, or regulator rectifier for charging system goodies abound.
My first reaction is that it'll be your issue. Could also be stator, but my money is on R/R.
More details on how it died?

My '98 did the same thing about three weeks ago. The tach gave a couple of jumps, the idle went rough and then it went stone dead. Push to the side of the road and call a rescue truck. It was the voltage regulator/rectifier. Our beloved bike is not perfect and is somewhat known for such failures. Be sure to check your battery and the stator also. If you are a DIY rider it will be about $120 minimum with a reg/rec from Rick's Electrics, in New Hampshire I think. They are very good. If you want to upgrade a little then you will need a new harness and a r/r from a 2000 VFR than reads volatage direct form the battery and not through the ignition switch. -- If all this is over your head then you should probably take it to a trusted shop. -- There are tons of strings on this subject. -- The upgrade harness can come from WireMyBike.com where Joshua is also very helpful. He's in Fort Worth.

When you got it home would it start after the battery was charged? I just charged my battery and the bike started fine. Just trying to get as much info as I can.

Sounds like you're running off of your battery. Could still be the R/R, the stator or the connections.
Your bike will fire off that charged battery until you run it out again.

99.9% sure it is your voltage regulator. i had the SAME problem as you but mine died getting on the freeway!!! haha! that was embarassing!:frown:

and my girlfriends dad had the same problem on his 97 vfr 800 too. i told him the same. he replaced it and wa-lah. fixed! its an easy fix so i would try this first!

    GOOD LUCK!

Just my 2 cents, from someone whose been there...
If you continue to run off the battery for too long with a faulty R/R,
You will possibly fry both your Stator and battery!
This will make your electrical problem much more costly.
A bad R/R can fry a stator / and a bad stator can fry the R/R
Continually, draining the battery below operational voltage will result in you needing a new one.

So worst case senario...new battery, new stator, new R/R $$$$$
if you continue to do as quoted above.

Download the ElectroSport Fault finding chart from their website.
    http://www.electrosport.com/electrosport_fault_finding.html

This PDF is without a doubt the most useful information when trying to diagnose any of the possible electrical problems that plague the VFR.

    Hope this helps-
    Steve

How much did the regulator cost?
