What is this unit...and why is it cooked..lol. I've got a vfrness already, and a good rectifier...no voltage spikes recently. Bike does have 65k miles on it and a lot of custom wiring due to me making it a streetfighter. Thanks!

if you ride long enough, these starter relays and wire terminals can melt down, and it's NOT uncommon. frequent inspection and periodic cleaning can delay that problem, but sooner or later.........................

the melting begins on the left upper teminal connection where the green corrosion has started.

Is there a go-to brand like Rick's or whatever...or just one of the eBay specials?

Try Caltric, they sell a lot of reproduction parts for moto's and they should have what you are looking for. The solenoid might not be round, might be square, but if you can live with that, you're golden for less than $50.00 for a starter relay and solenoid. They have them for most generations.

I think it's just that relay that I need. When I moved the wires in that fried mess, the power would come back on. Where's the solenoid of which you speak? Not the actual starter itself on the front of the bike?

BMW, HD, and Moto Guzzi are the only bikes I know of, with the solenoid integrated into the starter motor. There could be more, but those are the ones I actually know of, lol. I'm guessing your moto is a 4G, merely by the look of the tail in your avatar.

The entire assembly is still available from Honda. It would be impossible for me to figure out why the fuse holder melted, before it blew the fuse. "Custom" wiring can do do a lot of "custom" things.

It's a very common part, not hard to come by.

I think the three other wires came with the Vfrness as a bonus to redo the skinny factory wires to the relay, and I only installed one of them. It's the biggest one in the picture. Perhaps I should have installed them all...lol.

I spent about 5+ hours re-wiring things good and solid with a wiring hub. New relay and all new connections on problem areas. Hot damn did it make a difference. I gained nearly 1.5v in standard running voltage on the meter. No more flickering in my Koso bezel either. I have been running slightly dirty power for quite some time apparently!
