So I had found a second hand RR (risky I know) but knew the person and it passed all the tests I did and was free. Worth a go I thought. Now the problem is that the tests I did on my old one also passed with a multi meter. After recommendations I swapped it out but my battery will randomly reset my clock when I try and start it about once every week, maybe 2 weeks if I'm lucky.

Is the battery dead or is this a charging issue?
The test I just did after full charge the batt i was getting a reading of
    13.58v engine on and idle
12.87v engine rev at 2k rpm
    10.12v engine start .

Is it worth just getting a new RR and batt and stop being cheap?

Okay, let me see if I got this straight: you show 13.58 V with the engine idling, but it drops to 12.87 V with the
engine revved up over 2,000 rpm? Or are you saying it shows 13.58 V with the ignition on, but the engine not
running, and 12.87 V with the engine running and revving over 2,000 rpm?

    Correct .

Engine at idle is 13.58 and when at over 2k rpm it drops to 12.87.

The 10.12 only drops for a second when I start the bike.

so the bike starts and runs every time but it is just the clock resetting is the problem?

Yeah the bike starts about 95% of the time and if it doesn't I wait 10mins and it's fine.
It just resets the clock and odometer.
But I don't want to be stuck somewhere when the sun finally comes out .

You may as well have a tow truck on speed dial... please do a search for a thread called"the drill" - it's a charging system debug. Report the results.
You need to verify the battery is good -first.
Typically on 5th gens the R/R is toast. It's not something you can be cheap with.

The electrical system, specifically the stator-R/R-battery interaction, is the most problematic part of the VFR. The 5th Gen can be an enormously satisfying bike to own, but only if you get the electrical system sorted properly.

Have you taken a look at the electrical wiring connectors between the stator and the R/R and the battery? These connectors are notorious for failing due to corrosion, and this mode of failure can cause strange knock-on issues.

R/R is shot. Even if the battery were no good, you shouldn't be seeing the voltage drop
as rpm increase. Also, as was mentioned, check the plug from the stator.

If the clock is resetting when you try and start the bike I would say its a DUFF BATTERY, or at least a FLAT one.

    To check the charging.

    Engine 5k Revs

    Lights main beam

You should be seeing around 14.5v on your volt meter.

This is how the charging system is tested.

Once this has been don't then check the resistance in the RR.

A good battery at rest should read 12.8 and shouldn't drop below 10 when cranking. If the volts drop as the revs rise your reg/rec is toast.
