    nothin
    nothing let in the bottom of the left slider Capt. no oil lock in there. and the oil lock from the right side will not fit over the end of the left damper rod, the c clips holding the spring and washers won't allow it to go on.

    I confirmed that notch is still visible with the oil lock installed

    I did notice the manual shows the right damper rod with the same spring assy as the left side, but mine is different

    well , fork set #2 are now apart and they are identical to set 1.

    Fork set 3 are FUBAR, the circlips are rusted and the tips broken off so they're not coming apart. they will donate their heavy duty springs and the Allen bolts from the bottom. if I feel energetic ill hack the tops of the lower tubes off to free the chrome tube and damper.

    I can build 2 decent sets of forks from the 3.

    OK... hold on. What manual are you using?

    And there is def an oil lock piece for both sides. You're saying that the 2 empty fork sliders look the same with a flash light at the bottom? Or nothing else is coming out?

    REALLY not questioning your mechanical skills, just trying to get to a base line here.

    And if the slot in the damper rod is still visible with that oil lock installed, then the "fork drain bolt" should index the slot in the damper rod.

    I know there is some differences between the parts fische and the SM. And I'm pretty sure the Euro '84 1000R Service Manual has some differences as well in the forks.

    Thanks for the info on the drain bolt index, makes a lot of sense.

    Yes, there is nothing, no oil lock in the bottom of the left fork slide, not on either set of forks. I used a flashlight nothing in there. both sets of forks have identical internals.

    the manual is a Factory Honda VF1000R Shop manual. (it does show an oil lock on both sides). But reality is there is nothing in there.

    OK... referenced some other stuff. It appears it does not have the big oil lock piece that EVERY OTHER VF has, including the 1000F. You're good to go then.

    The 84 1000R does have it. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

    In the next few weeks, I'm disassembling a set of 1000F forks and a set of 86 1000R forks (that I know have not been serviced). Still intrigued.

    Will be able to build 2 good sets of forks from the 3 extra sets I had, ill also keep the HD Springs from the set I cant get apart, they were used in a race bike. Ill sell those off.

    here are the sliders primed and painted/clear coated with Dupont Mosaic in fighting red

    Looking great! Reminds me I need to work on a paint booth for my outer garage.
    Did you mask off where the fork brace goes?

    no I didn't, the brace brackets on one set were actually shimmed for a tighter fit, the other set had paint under the brace too, so I didn't mask it there.

    I haven't work'd on any 'Rs, but on my 'Fs I support the motor and build the bike around it. Yes, motor is Over 200lbs.
    Easy Frame fit with 2 people Puzzling it ON.

    But had one motor vibrate a lot.
    So, loosen all motor support bolts, tap motor around with a rubber mallet, reTighten the bolts,,..
    Vibration gone (old mechanics trick).
    You might want to wait to tighten support bolts till near the end (Don't Forget!).

    The 84 VF1000R had the same front suspension setup as the 84 VF1000F.

    Bit more progress (and more blurry pictures with my crap camera), wiring harness installed along with rear fender and some other bits. Rear shock, and swing arm are next along with the rebuilt forks. Pics of the swing arms, im using the one thats clean ( just cleaned it) but will use the brake line brackets off the one beside it as they are in better shape. One set of forks still to re assemble ( you can see the two sets of springs).

    This is the Funnest Part of a Restoration,,..
    Like taking Brand New parts off the shelf and building a new bike from scratch, so rewarding.
    Most everything fits properly but had to use a Floor Jack to press up the Boom Box into the Rear EXH Pipes.
    Don't forget to tighten those rear Header Pipe Nuts, hard to get at.
    And had a Lower Rad begin to crack and leak slowly, so make the Rad mounting brackets line up and fit with Zero effort.

    Use a brand new rad cap.
    [IMG]
    A Rad Cap seals in 3 places and has 2 Valves, any which can cause grief.
    For $10 I get a Subaru Rad Cap.

    Found some Dubious Electrical issues inside the Harness;
    [IMG]

    Extended the Rear Fender, to keep the Shock/Swing Arm clean;
    [IMG]

    Lost my VIN when I Powder Coated;
    [IMG]

    And had to Clean out Frame Threads;
    [IMG]

    Use Molybdenum Disulphate everywhere ya can (so ya don't have to snap off, drill out the rear Brake Caliper Glide Pin);

    [IMG]
    Boy, the way some people Don't maintain their stuff,,..
    I also blame Honda for not using better lube.

    Pull ALL the side plates off all Bearings, Clean, Lube,,.. or Replace.
    [IMG]
    Replacement Bearings should have side plates on BOTH sides.

    Here's a new bearing that was Over Packed with grease;
    [IMG]
    Could blow the side plates OFF at Speed.

    Even some new replacement bearings I bought had only a single Shot Spot of Grease,,.. always check.

    Replace the wimpy Honda hose clamps (Fuel & Rad) with better ones;
    [IMG]

    ALL black plastic was liberally coated with Amoral.

    Your Bike will be Better than New!

    Bit more progress this weekend....

    Starting to sort through the handlebars, brakes , clutch slaves etc to get the best parts to rebuild.

    Not much left of the "Black Bike"

    All the tote boxes and baskets are full of spare VF1000R parts, I'll be selling a pile of stuff when the project is done.
