Shift noise from 1sr to 2nd gear

My '92 shifts a bit noisy from 1st to 2nd. The clutch disengages just fine and there is no issue with the pushrod assembly. I'm pretty easy on the bike and it only has 10k original miles. Very clean, well taken care of. Any suggestions on adjustments?

 

Noisy how? Clunk, ratchet type noise, clatter noise, rattle noise? More info needed.

 

It's a bit of a ratchet. Kind of like a bad syncro. It's not bad and sometimes the shifts is very smooth when the rpms match just right. It seems to be more apparent when the engine and tranny are good and warm. The bike has been stored fir much of the last 25 years and it was very clean, and scratch free when I got. I don't believe its been abused at all. Perhaps its just the way the bike is but if there are any adjustments other than oil and hydraulic fluid change I would be interested. Thanks

 

Are you the original/first owner?

If you're not the original owner, regardless of how "low miles" the bike is, it's still possible that the poor bike was "clutchless speed shifted" from 1st to 2nd gear enough times to compromise the original profile of the edges of the "dog" teeth responsible for engaging the gearbox non-freewheeling cog with the freewheeling 2nd gear cog. How many of these improper high-energy shifts does it take to re-contour the gear-dogs? I don't know, but if your 1st to 2nd shift is difficult/noisy and sometimes hard to accomplish, or if this shift sometimes "pops back out", you may have a problem.

If this is the case the only fix is to dig into the engine's gearbox and remove-and-replace the messed up gears.

 

The shift from 1st to 2nd on most bikes is more of a jump than any other gears. Sometimes you need to be really
firm with that shift, shifting too easily, or being a bit lazy will sometimes result ins noisy/bad/missed shifts. A slow
shift tends to be more of an issue going from 1st to 2nd, so a quicker/firmer shift may be the way to go.

Old oil that needs to be changed can sometimes cause issues too. Sloppy chains can make you think there's a problem
with the gears when in fact it's the chain.

 

Thanks for the suggestion. Its beautiful here in Boise today so I took the bike for a spin. I was firmer with my shifts and the bike worked well. I guess im in the habit of taking it easy. My 91 Honda Accord has 260000 miles on the original clutch Anyway the firmer shift makes for much smoother shifts for every gear. Thanks again.

 

My cbr600 does the same thing when the engine is hot. I also find a very firm shift from 1st to 2nd takes away most of the problem.
