It may be a market issue for motorcycles. They don't have to warranty their bikes longer than they do which raises the question, "why does BMW warrant their bikes for 3 years"? Heck if I know.

I can't see an over heat causing oil usage, any damage would be more pronounced like a blown head gasket or warped cylinder head for example. in which case it would probably over heat again or you'd have oil in the water or water in the oil.
You say you have fully synth oil, has the bike always been run on this ?, these engines just need semi synthetic oil, one of the problems fully synth can cause is bore glazing, this would cause higher than normal oil consumption, it can be hard to get it back without having the bores honed which you wouldn't do as it involves a complete engine strip on these bikes.
I don't want and we don't need i'm sure to get into a big oil debate as that has caused many issues on many forums. but general consensus is that if using fully synth you do a good few thousand miles on semi synth to let the rings really bed in. even after that fully synth isn't really necessary as good quality semi is all the bike needs for a long life (with regular changes)..
I'm not a fan of fully synth as the extra expense imo isn't worth it, I also own an MT10 (FZ10) and Yamaha state to use fully synth. When i bought it (with 700 miles) a dealer had put semi in and the gearbox was very clunky, I changed to the recommended fully synth and it smoothed the gear clunk out, But in the next 2000 miles it used about 0.4 of a litre, I wouldn't expect that on a new bike. I ride that one hard which can help ring bedding even on fully synth but it maybe that it will now always use some oil between changes.
If what I've said is the case with yours then there's a good chance that the oil consumption won't go up so at least you'll be able to work out mileages to top up to keep on top of it.

Bought a brand new fireblade a few years ago.. The bike lasted 3 weeks before I took the engine apart... result was 143bhp at the wheel.. had the bike 7 years before I sold it.. I don't get bikes for warranty.. that's a car drivers mentality lol

If you pull plugs you might be able to tell which cylinder is burning oil. As far as compression tests, i have seen good compression rings giving good compression and weak oil rings burning oil so a compression test may not tell all.

I have a rented Kia Soul now. Did not know what they looked like and the styling is "different" but it is actually a pretty nice car. Car and Driver rated it good and seems to be reliable. Did not expect to like a Kia, but I kinda do.

When I bought a new Bonneville in '69 I rode it to a mates place and with 5 miles recorded we took the thing apart and put it back together properly ...should have done that with the Commado Combat, named I think for way the main bearings would explode regularly

I think it was because I compared Honda and Kia car warranties on the other page. Of course, if you have me on ignore, you wouldn't have seen that post (and you wouldn't be seeing this one either)... lol

My CBR500r burns what I think is a lot of oil. Never burnt a drop before Honda, and I'm hearing this happens a lot with Honda small engines. I honestly don't think their reputation for bullet-proof engines are warranted. It's frustrating, and I want to know WHY it burns too. I know yours overheated, but for all those that haven't.... why are they burning so much, why do they call it "normal", and why isn't happening with other brands?

adding some extra oil every few hundred miles seems a small price to pay for the satisfying thrill of riding a Honda. break-in process might have been wrong. ? no real comparisons between Honda small engine division rumors and the motorcycle sector.

rumors i read suggested that your CBR500r is from a batch of engines that weren't so good and used oil, dija buy it first year ? maybe there IS no problem, IDK ?

    Big question now is : WHY didn't you buy a tried-and-true CBR600 instead ?

Normal break-in. Bought new Spring of 2014 (2nd year). I didn't hear that rumor, but sure heard a lot of similar problems.

I run the shit out of my VFR and is uses no oil. So what if it does use oil. A lot of engines do.

Agreed - All engines will have an 'allowable oil burn amount'. As long as it isn't higher than that then its a non-issue. If it is higher then you decide if it is cheaper to add oil once a month or get the engine rebuilt.

Personally the amounts are not extreme & I'd just stick in cheaper 10/40 oil & get it working...

Looking at all of these posts including my own with the overheating and temp power loss, Break-in done harsher than
I have ever done with advise to do so, Oil Type etc. I guess it comes down to these questions, facts, opinions and status.

    • How many of you went to full synthetic after the break-in and the third oil change?
    • Many if not all do not - except me- sees oil usage on the 2014-2015 with less than 8,000 miles and began on the 3rd oil change (5700 miles) to Full Syth. that I know of.
    • popkat stated that bore glazing may have occurred. And I think this "may" be true, but do not know his technical background or experience and since no visible smoke except water vapor burn off at starting occurs like all mentioned is normal. And no other major damage seems to occurred like performance or water in oil or oil in water.
    • "Bore Glazing"I did do some digging on this online with no conclusion.
    • Oil usage again is about 1/4 a quart in 700-1000 miles so about $15-$20 year cost to me. So NO I am not having it broken down. No brainer.
    • Dealer techs said that they did not see, smell or said I should not worry about the amount of oil consumption.
    • This is the first bike that I have ever used full syth. oil in as well. And the only one that I have had oil consumption. I wish I could go back , but all of the info I can find says that if you used full syth. for a few thousand miles it is best to stay that way. Any input in that from all of you would be appreciated since there are so many opinions in the real world or technically.

Bottom line and the end of this for me is that I am pissed that I got the one that had a cheap part failure, and now oil usage and have lost all mechanical confidence in my bike which I have never had before with any bike that I have owned. Used, New or otherwise from japan which are 5 of them prior. Every time I take her out, I am always looking at the fucking temp gauge and if it gets to 221- 225 I am waiting to see if it goes another 3-4 degrees worrying that it may happen again, and I am pissed going up a canyon that I ride every time I get out with any bike I have owned. It is a buzz kill.
