Bicycle thread!!

Was out looking over my bike before a 30km ride this weekend and noticed that my rear tire was down to the belts in a couple spots. Replaced it with a 25mm tire I had on hand. After another look I think a 28mm tire would fit in my frame, though probably a tight squeeze in between the brake pads and might look ridiculous with the 23mm wide wheels. My 23mm front tire will probably last another lifetime of the rear tire, so it might be a while before I get to ride on two 25mm's, unless a puncture fast-tracks a replacement.

 

Yes, but I think it's more dangerous than riding a motorcycle in the twisties. I never ever ride in a city. I ride bicycles on county roads only. If you're out of shape, just build up your mileage and you'll get better quick.

 

Most Americans would consider riding bicycle or motorcycle in traffic is dangerous, that's because of the car culture in America.
Most people think that roadways belong to cars, bicycles and motorcycles are just toys, don't belong on the roads.

In my teens, I pedaled coast-to-coast, across the NA continent on a Huffy 10-speed, from Seattle, WA to Washington DC & Ocean City, NJ.
Over 10 weeks spent on the road, with camping gear, with local YMCA, group of ten teenagers with two adult guides.
I can't imagine nowadays parent would let their kids do something like that.
I worked as a bicycle messenger for two summers in high school, in Seattle and SF, CA.
Back then there were no cell phones, drivers are not as distracted, or so it seemed.
I made an effort to keep up with pedaling while in service overseas, even pedaling in war zones; made friends out of unlikely situations when you are on a bicycle.
Personally, I commute on bicycle because it's the least amount of hassle, no need to look for parking, just sucks when weather is bad.

 

Getting my bike back today with a major tune up, new tires and tubes, wheel truing, etc. I hate to work on bicycles, obviously. That, swimming, and light weight lifting, which I do, are two of the best ways to stay in shape which helps in riding a VFR. No complaints about egos on the VFR when I'm in shape.

 

Yup, that's what I mostly do, bike and swim, and run in the winter when I can't bike outdoors (and I can only stand short sessions biking on the trainer)

 

I don't do a whole lot other than cycling. Used to swim to keep in shape during winters, but driving to a pool gets old, especially when roads are snow-covered.

Bicycling on the indoor trainer is just tediously boring, and nearly impossible without a fan (or two) blowing.
In college, I used to ride on the trainer which watch football, sprint at every snap and just cruise easily between plays for the rest of the game.
Usually get a decent workout after 60 min.; which is about as much football as I can tolerate.

 

Just made the decision to buy a new bicycle. The technology has advanced so much since I stopped riding 6 years ago, it's amazing. It's just a matter of finding the right bike for me. The selection is awesome.

 

Technology and bicycle barely go together. I mean you pedal the thing and it moves, what else is there? Unless
you're talking electric scooter-type bicycle.

The bike is no better or faster than the power that drives it: the rider.

 

You apparently don't know much about bicycles. Try doing a century on a Walmart bicycle. If your statement is true, 2017 motorcycles are the same as 2007 motorcycles. They have an engine, just twist the throttle and go...

 

Geeze, I've been riding bicycles longer than you've been alive. And high end bikes for over 25 years. I've seen people do centuries on old Schwinn bikes that weigh upwards of 50 lbs. , all the new bikes do is make it easier. Exactly where does technology fit, other than designing the frames? Get a new Trek, and an old Peugot, put them side by side, step back about 20 paces and try to tell the differences, other than downtube mounted shifters and cable loops. Hell, why do many, if not most, racers still use tubulars even after 130 years?

AFATG, get a 1999 VFR and a 2014 VFR, put them side by side and ask someone other than a VFR aficionado to see much difference at all.

Please explain where the "new technology" is. Even push-button electric shifting would be old hat. Mavic tried it years ago. Expound away.

New bike market is about as complicated as shopping for cars, with new Trump tariffs, the prices are likely to go up soon.

Not sure who you refer, I don't know everything about bicycles but I do know a fair amount for the bicycles that I have and have owned.

 

I was the one being referred to as "apparently don't know much about bicycles". But because I disagree with him, it must
be so.

There are tons of new bikes, new styles, and such, but I took exception to the phrase "new technology" being available for bicycles.

 

Hopeless.

 

Okay, I really want to know what you consider the amazing technology. I have no idea what you consider that to be. But as I said, other than new carbon fiber/composite frames I don't know of any new technology on bikes. New styles, new tires, new tire sizes. Please explain where the new technology is. This an honest request. I may pooh pooh it, but I am curious if I missed something, unlikely as that may be.

Due to the contentiousness of your"request" I feel like you are challenging my opinion and feelings about something unimportant in the scope of things. I merely made a comment....that's it, that's all. Everyone is entitled to an opinion including you and I don't feel compelled to engage in a "contest" with you about what is or is not new technology. If you did a little research, you might change your mind but I really don't care enough to get involved in another VFRWorld negative contest unnecessarily. I already know what trolls will tag off this post. If you don't agree with people, sometimes the best thing to do is just pass on it. We can't even have an innocuous thread on bicycles here. Nice frame, very much like the ones made 15-20 years ago for time trialing. Still looking for all the "new"
technology.

 

It's a Chinese carbon frame from eBay,
purchased at significant discount from my CC annual reward.
Frame kit include integrated brakes.. my first experience working with them, it will be interesting with all the internal cable routing.

 

Yep. I like the internal cable routing that's become common now and, AFAIC, rim brakes are nearly obsolete.
