Help with sixth gen chain guard clip removal

Does anyone know how to remove the two inside clips for the chain guard? Is it a turn and pop kind of thing? I can turn them a quarter turn but I'm afraid to try and pry them up. They have a phillips style head but are very fragile...almost stripped one just trying to turn it.

 

Anybody? I have a service manual but it does not describe how to remove them. A search yields nothing as well.

 

They're crap, and hard to remove if they've been in there for years.
It is just an expandable base plug with a plastic screw.
You need to hold the base while unscrewing the inner part, but I find it easier to try and pry the screw out and get new ones for re-assembly.

 

What OZ said, turn the inner screw until it pops up, then pry the base out. Why are you taking it off, just curious.

 

I’m just replacing the chain and sprocket. I thought it would be nice to take it off and give everything a really nice clean while I was back there.

I ran into that this weekend as well, left it on and cleaned under it as best I could.

 

In middle of chain and sprocket job, had same issue, I have a parts manual if you need Honda part number. I also found my chain slider was GONE! Been hearing lately a hollow slow sporadic sound at low speed, chain was slapping the hollow swing arm. Hoping I don’t have to pull swing arm off to get chain slider on. You rivet your chain back together(what do you use) or use a clip?

 

After removing the two allen screws, I was able to get under the gaurd well enough to get all the built up dirt. I opted to just leave those clips alone. Maybe I’ll order them for the next tine, that way I won’t have to worry about them, if I mess them up.

Yes, the chain has a rivet master link. I have the Stockton chain break and rivet tool kit. Works really well, and inexpensive too.

 

The two inside clips I destroyed getting out, replaced with auto door clip that fit perfect and tight. With new chain slider, sprockets, GXW chain it sounds so smooth and knocking is gone. I know I’ll catch hell for this but I’ve always used a side grinder to remove tops of rivets on one link, pop apart, use a chain tool than presses the new link to chain to specified amount, then flair the new rivets with a special center punch.

 

When the cheap kit I was using broke trying to remove the rivets I ended up using the grinder to cut the link off too. Probably just going to do it that way the next time as it was pretty easy.
