Newbie and VTEC engine noise

Ok, so I just had the break-in service done on my '07 RWB Interceptor and I needed to make sure it ran ok....

Anyway, I could feel the added power come on in the mid-6000 rpm engine range, but what is the additional noise from? Intake/exhaust noise or mechanical noise? The bike is still stock (no exhaust or other upgrades... yet).

Just wanted to make sure there is nothing to worry about since the noise is so pronounced when the VTEC kicks in.

I don't know the answer, but part of it must be mechanical as the second set of valves are kicking in. It is a sweet sound.

 

1) The second set of valves roar to life.
2) The air box allows extra air to enter.
3) Rider's rearend puckers up.

Great, aint it?

 

Don't worry.... eventually you will ride a gear down just to get that sound as much as possible.

 

Its the sweet sound of the rest of the engine waking up, just turn the throttle to hear more

 

When the other valves start to operate it allows the engine to breathe easier. the noise is from the additional air coming in. It is why your Doctor asks you to take a deep breath when he listens to your lungs he can hear better the deeper you breathe in. nothing is wrong enjoy it

 

My wife previously owned a 2000 Interceptor. We just replaced it with a 2007 VFR and have been quite disappointed. Mileage is down ~12%, low and mid range torque is poor and it is rahter noisy at the low end. I now understand the noise is due to the change in active valves. The poor low end torque and poor fuel consumption suggest something else is wrong. Ideas?

the extra music is like having a four-bbl on an old hotrod, it is just right. the more you ride it the more you love that beautiful sound. ok now ive got to go get my fix all over again.

 

I too have an '07 and I previously had a '99 and I'd say something is wrong. On the '07, I'm getting 1, maybe 2 less mpg and in the lower rpm range, the bike is stealth quiet. Your bike must still be under warranty. Have you taken it back to the dealer to have it checked out?

 

I think theres is no need to worry. I have scorpion exhaust and a K&N with a opend up air box on my 07 25th & at 6400RPM when the second set of valves kick in the Growl is louder than the Exhaust! So there should be some of that effect on a stock bike.

 

Greg Beshouri, if your milage is down 12% and poor power, i'd say something is wrong. I ride my 04 daily, a lot of intown and freeway and I've never got less than 42 mpg. Cruising on the freeway for trips I average about 50 mpg. A large chunk of my riding is two up, with my girlfriend on the back, doesn't change my milage at all. Good luck with your bike.

 

I would agree with the honda wolf!!! I have an 08 VFR and this thing is a rocket off the line. Low power is great!! The only complant I have is when it hit 6500 RPM and the VTEC starts kicking in it hits a dead spot!!! Once I hit 6800 RPM the dead spot is gone.

 

Agreed, noise is normal..the other things you mentioned are not.
