    Stumbled on this great picture of an exploded diagram of a Gen 6's V4 Internals, I love its clear detail and don't remember seeing it posted before.

    The Gen 6 engine is a "Hyper" VTec which means only 2 valves operate until 7000RPM where after the next 2 valves kick in....For further info read below link from the 2002 Gen 6 launch.

    Calling what is on the 6th gen VFR "VTEC" is a stretch. It doesn't use different cam lobes, or anything else, to vary valve timing or lift, it simply uses oil pressure to turn off 2 of the 4 valves under 7KRPM.

    how are the valves turned off? Do they collapse those two lifters by starving the lifters of oil? Seems mighty low tech considering all the wild stuff going on in auto engines with systems altering lift, duration, etc with multiple cam lobes. Some engines are even "phasing" the intakes by automatically rotating the cams (relative to the timing chain) to advance or retard the cam timing.

    Honda said at the time the auto style VTec would have been too costly and bulky size wise to implement ( engineering ? ) so they used the cheaper, smaller more basic approach of just chiming between 2 valve's & 4 valve's.

    The other reasons Honda gave was to make the VFR's Power delivery more exciting ( marketing ? ) and Honda was in the middle of a environmental push so for the new VFR the "Hyper" VTec was seen as needed to meet California's proposed 2008 pollution limits in 2002 ( marketing again ? ).
