95 vfr750 starter clutch question

Hi from Melbourne Australia, I recently happily purchased my 95 vfr750 and absolutely love it however maybe every 3rd thumb of the starter button a grinding or mechanical slipping sound emits from the engine. She does kick over after a couple more thumbs but my googleing suggests that it's the starter clutch. I'm no mechanic however I try and do as much as I can have taken my trx850 apart which I still have to put back together at some stage but no major motor stuff. My question is how much time do I have till I can no longer start the bike, could my starter clutch be knackered and if so is it an easy job for an arborist attempting to be a mechanic? Cheers.

 

Easy job after the clutch cover is removed. in the worst case you could have a cracked starter clutch, and in the best case, just replace 3 10-cent springs behind the rollers.

 

It is a very easy job as squirrelman stated. Even as non-mechanic it is a two beer job at best.

 

Thanks Gents, I'll certainly give it a go as I was about to give her a general service anyway but do you think the sound I've mentioned whilst staring seem consistent with the starter clutch?

if u want to try something involving less time and labor, you could gently lay the bike on its right side and hope engine oil will get up into the starter clutch and lube the sticky springs and rollers enough to work fine again.....................

This worked for me once or twice over the years and is alot more common on long-stored bikes.

I realise this is an old thread, but does anyone have the part number for the springs in the starter clutch? I can’t seem to find that info on the net. Thanks.
