LANE SPLITTING IN CA

    Riding home from work on the 170 and the 5 I witnessed something I’ve never seen in all the years of riding.
    Two motorcyclist splitting lanes standing up.
    At first with the first guy I thought he was just stretching, but nope he just kept on toolin along standing.
    Has anyone ever seen this before?

    I’ll ride standing up sometimes, particularly in hot weather just to get more air flow to my upper body, however not for extended periods of time and I don’t ever recall doing it while lane splitting.

    That’s what I thought the first rider was doing but saw him about a mile later—
    Still standing and by then he was on the N 5 slammed with cars.

    Standing up on the pegs transfer the rider's weight from seat to pegs, lowers the center mass of the bike closer to ground level, makes balancing the bike easier.
    At the same time, rider's eyes are higher able to see over vehicles that have lower roof line, see further down the road.
    Standing on the pegs likely more visible to drivers, too.

    I am trying to understand the lowering of the mass from sitting (or all or most of your weight) on a seat vs. the pegs being aligned directly at the same point or position on the bike. I am guessing that some weight would be added like your thighs that are more forward, and if standing would add about 2lbs bone and whatever weight your thigh muscles weigh on the suspension at that point. As far as maneuverability I see maybe crouching, not standing so that your weight is on the pegs and the bars and center on the bike. I would think standing would transfer weight to the front end due to height and weight being delivered at a different angle than normal to the front end.

    Shit what do I know, I just ask questions and wait for smart answers!:) Understanding ergonomics cuts into my drinking time at night. ;-)

    Standing up raises your COG, but you can see better.

    Dynamic has more to do with moments of inertia from moving masses. The CoG due to gravity isn't changed.
