1986 VFR700FII

So we had my Birthday Party on Saturday at a local Brew Pub. I opened the card from my parents and this was inside.


1986 VFR700FII. I had given it to my Dad years ago as it was his favorite bike. It's not perfect but is very nice. A little bitter sweet as it means he is done riding.

 

Happy birthday. How long since he stopped riding it?

 

Thank you! He did not ride it this last summer (They bought a yacht). He did run it and keep the battery fresh.

 

It is bitter sweet. A friends dad just hung it up too. Last summer we all went on a ride with him. Took him to lunch and had a good time. I think we all sensed it was getting close to that time. We all have the photo of the group shot of the last ride.

My dad had to give it up quite a few years ago, mostly at the request of my mom and siblings. He lost vision in one eye and had poor vision in the other. The one slightly useful eye was repaired a little, so his single eye vision was a little better but his judging of distance and coordination was too far off for our liking. I hated to be in agreement with my mom and siblings but would much rather have my dad around!

A year or two ago, I took him on the back of my 09 to visit a place that he use to frequent on his bike, Duccmann and I rode together, as it was an event for one of his friends. We were good a good pace up through Highway 33 and although I think he was apprehensive about the speeds we were going, I think he really felt good about being on a bike again, even as a passenger. I plan to take him on a few more rides this year, just to get him out of the house more. It pains me to see my folks getting older but, that is life.

 

Take the time to be with them while they are around. I wished I had been able to spend more time with both my parents before they passed but distance made that very difficult. If I had to do it over, i would have spent less time and money on frivolous things and more going back home to see mom and dad.

Wow! Nice ride. I can't believe how well my 1987 Honda VFR700F2 goes! Hope you enjoy that unit. Happy Belated Birthday.

 

OK... similar drill to the "new addition to the shop" VF1000R.

Carbs (gonna be) out for cleaning and re-documenting. Going to do the coolant o-rings in the "V" while they are exposed. Lower rad spigot shoes some slight weeping, so pull the hose and clean up. Need to do a freshen up on the front calipers, as they are sticking slightly. Gonna get a new right switch assy, either CBR600F2/F3 or individual RC51 components, not sure yet, but the start button is showing signs of being broken.

 

That's a nice present Mike.. I'm sure that it won't take long to put your stamp on it - however its not like you really needed another VFR - lol

 

Very nice Captain and I missed it but Happy Belated Birthday...your parents are way too cool. I had a VFR750 may years ago and I'm sorry I sold it. I'm doing a refurb on my VF1000f so it looks like your VFR right now.....keep the pics coming.

Oh man... good timing. One of the coolant caps was about ready to fail.


This is going to be the drill on all of my V4 bikes that are still on original rubber, one after another. Carb and coolant o rings. Sucks, but not as bad as it happening out somewhere.

Been working on sourcing the o-rings individually. Think I got it.



Last piece of the puzzle was the Viton fuel cross-over o-rings. I have an OEM set for the 1986 VF1000R and VFR750F to verify against before final assembly. Harder than you would think too get them figured out, but the savings is ridiculous.

 

Is that information you can share Captian? I have another set of carb's here to rebuild so it would be nice to save a few $

 

The float bowl o-rings are -041 (1/16" cross section width). You can get them in Viton 75A and 90A Durometer (hardness), I've used both no problems. Perfect fit. File down the locating bosses on the bowls a bit to make sure it can bottom out all the way and compress the o-ring. I had a VF750F set that were just a bit too high and didn't let it seal. I have put these in 6 bikes now with zero issues. Amazon has them for very good prices in many different quantities.

The fuel tube crossovers I found that are perfect are Viton "7 x 2mm" from oringsandmore.com. Think I actually got them through ebay from him. They are slightly thicker, but when stretched over the tube they are perfect. Pretty sure -012 o-rings from that same Amazon link above are a good match for the fuel o-rings too, but I haven't checked after finding the 7 x 2mm. -011 were very close, but when installed they were stretched a little thinner and it didn't feel like a good positive seal. But I bet they would have been fine. From dimensions off of the fuel tube, -012 look pretty damn good. I may order some just to verify.

The vent tube o-rings really don't degrade like the fuel o-rings do, but I have some coming and I'll give a progress report. These are a little tougher because the o-rings I've found are too thick for this application.
