87 VFR... Appearently the fuel pump went out and the previous owneer put a puralator style pump on the bike. The problem is that is runs all the time. Does the 700 need a fuel pump or will it run right off gravity feed? or is this fuel pump ok to run?
    thanks

NOt sure about the '87, but the older models run just fine w/o the pump. If your carbs are a little leaky, you'll have to turn the gas off when parked for more than a few hours.

The pump should shut off when it reaches about 3 psi.

I hear a 1983 Honda Civic 1.3L pump will work

Yes the pump does cut off. Its controlled by the relay so as long as the relay is connected which it sounds like yours isn't you should be fine. Hope that helps.

My fuel pump just died (see fire thread)...

How do I setup this gravity feed? My fuel pump is shot.
    1. Can I use any filter that shuts off at 3 psi?
    2. How do I setup a gravity feed? Do I need the 3 PSI required? What about the fuel filter?

    1. The fuel PUMP shuts off when it detects 3psi of backpressure.
    2. Just run the line from the carbs directly to the tank. Fuel filter is placed after tank, before carbs - usually under the seat. Filter is not necessary, but a good idea.

Who needs a pump? I've got two, one is in great condition, the other is in less than great condition. Make an offer im a PM... I'd like to pass these on to people that need them. Tons of other engine parts too.

The stock pump doesn't really 'shut off'. It stays powered on all of the time but only has enough umph to push the fuel at ~3psi. Once the flow stops it actually locks up, that's why you hear it stop making noise.

Gravity feed is pretty easy. Just take the line going from the tank to the pump and disconnect it from the pump. Attach it to the line going to the carbs instead. Make sure to remove the filter from the system as it would be too much of a restriction.

So why do we need a fuel relay if it automatically shuts off?

An electronic relay is used so a low voltage "trigger" signal can enable a large electrical load on another wire to power a device.

IIRC, the pump gets it's power via the relay
    - which in turn is "triggered" when the coils fire
    - which in turn is on only when the the bike is running or the start button is pressed AND the kill switch is in the "Run" position

Ok, so I have the pumped hooked up... I can hear it switch on, then nothing.

I have the fuel line going directly to the pump, then the other end into a gas tank. when I try to start the engine nothing happens. I would think it would fill the gas tank... Does it need some type of closed system to work?

I also have tried to run without the fuel lines attached... I would think it should run continuously...
