i'm having an intermittent problem with starting. when i turn the ignition to "ON", all the appropriate lights turn on, but when i push the start button, nothing happens except the headlight dims while i depress the button. there is no click from the starter relay. this is only an intermittent problem, though. usually it starts up just fine. does this sound like the relay is going? any other thoughts?
i just want to add some info after further investigation . . . i took another look today, hoping that the aid of daylight would reveal something new. at first, i was having the same problem (ignition set to "ON", push the start button, but nothing happens). so i took the side cover off to take a closer look at the starter relay switch. just to see what would happen, i pushed the start button, and wiggled the connectors to/from the relay switch at the same time, and suddenly . . . there was a click from the relay, the engine cranked, and started running. does this indicated that i just have a loose/dirty connection and the relay is fine, or was this just a coincedence, and the relay is still on its way out?
apologies for the triple-post, but i forgot to mention that after it started successfully, i let it warm up for a minute or so, then turned it off and on successfully two or three more times (without touching the relay at all).
If it were me, I'd undo all the connections, clean them up and put them back together. If the problem persists, I'd replace the relay. If the relay isn't too much, me?... I'd just replace it for peace of mind ....'cause I don't have too many pieces to spare...
^ what he said, you beat me to it, as I was going to say clean up the connections and make sure everything is good and tight, inculding the Battery connection.
I'm having a simular problem to this on my '96. I called to order the relay and the guy said, "You want both of them?" I guess the bike takes two??? I looked at the scematic and see two but everyone talks as if there is only one by the battery. Is it different on the 4th gen bikes? Or, am I looking at the wrong relay(s)? Thanks! Rick
starter relay and starter relay switch are 2 differnt parts. Switch is near the battery. relay assembly is up front near the fuse box.
starter switch relay So does that mean MrDe was talking about the starter switch relay and not the starter relay??? If I'm looking at the right part, it is about $80 and called a Starter magnetic switch (bike bandit 154303-001)? Is this the part that seems to go bad for people, the one you can short over with an 10mm wrench? Thanks!
The starter solonoid for my '83 is $96.00!! I might be able to find it cheaper if I had to order one. Mine acted up and I cleaned the connections and haven't had any more problems.
