Wonder what finally spurred this LATE recall. I understand it takes a while for stock to hit shelves sometimes, but still.
Could have been obvious manufacturing errors for that particular stock.
Just wondering other causes because I'd hate to hear it was due to a serious or fatal accident. :(

I don't understand why they won't simply rid this model of the unnecessary nut.

WHAAAAAT?! You mean all of those who experienced a failure weren't inept mechanics? Glad this finally was brought to light and hopefully, like AM said, it wasn't due to a serious accident or worse, a death.

What about those who have experienced massive failures in the past? Those filters are long gone by now. Who will pay for towing and the like? Fuck you K&N. If you produce the perfect filter tomorrow, you will not get my business. YOU FAILED!

I just purchased a used rig that has one of those, I have a replacement already, they can keep theirs.
I have filter wrenches with the flutes, so far they work pretty good.

I have an uninstalled one that has no date/manufacturing marks on it. I contacted K&N and they asked for photos. I sent them the requested photos and they set a reply asking for my address and have sent me a replacement on agreement that I destroy the unidentified one. They are taking this serious and are trying to make amends.

I wonder if there was a catastrophic failure that resulted in a death and they got sued, beat in court, and this was part of the settlement.

I think the sue anyone for anything culture in the USA is the reason they are taking it so serious. Easier and cheaper (and less risk) to give away a few filters than being sued and the potential loss involved with a long drawn out court case. Also helps them win the PR battle as well, if they are seen to stand behind their product (no matter how terrible it is in the first place!).

Quite possible. But I think the ship has long sailed for K&N in the PR department. At least here it has. It hasn't been really clear here though. Has the filter been improved or are they just throwing more garbage at us out there?

Nobody would seriously trust K&N after their botched handling of this, at least I certainly hope not...

Saw another K&N failure on a Facebook group today. Guy almost went down in a round-about.

Yes, I removed the K and n, and then read their initial release on the web. I hung on to the filter and it was unmarked, so I put it in the recycling bin. Reading your post I am glad that I did not seek a free replacement.

They did not address the years of prior failures that had nothing to do with the nut. These were O ring failures from them being the wrong size. I had 2 failures of this type, CBR and VFR. I don't care what they do, I'll never use their filters again. Getting sideways on the CBR heading into the back straight at PBIR made sure that they are on my banned list.
