Hey my VFR family. Was running dino oil for the last 44K miles. I just did my first oil/filter change using Amsoil 10-40. Now I'm having valve or lifter noise. Sounds like only one. MAYBE a slight decrease in power and throttle response. I've read various reports of the same issue on cars and bikes that switch to synthetic in a well worn engine.
I'm planning a 2200 mile ride in 2 months, so i 'm hoping this is no biggie.
Anyone have similar issues? Is this something to worry about?

More details: does it sound when hot or cold? Synth oil thins with temp but preserves lubricity better, so some ticking would be normal when the engine is hot. Anyhow i've noticed the bike ticks a little when first starting it on the morning while oil does not reach the head.
This engines does not have hydraulic lifters, they are fixed shim-under-bucket type of adjustment. Maybe its just time to check valve clearance on your bike, whats your mileage?

I had the same issue. I bought a 93 last fall and had no noise. This past winter I went all through the bike. I changed all fluids. I used mobil 1 motorcycle oil. After that I had a tap noise above 2000 rpm. It would go away when hot but I also had a weird knock at idle when I blipped the throttle only when hot. Found some info about cam lifting causing the noise. Never had these noise before. I ran It for about 300 miles thinking it would get better. Never did. Switched back to conv oil. Knock at idle stopped but still have tap noise. I do not know if its related to oil or not but when the bike was built it only required conv oil. Lots of people use syn oil. Just thought it was strange the noise started after the mobil 1 oil change. Bike has 25k miles on it.

Vega probably has this one right. Full Synthetic is much thinner that Dino oil especially at temp but still does a much better job. It's probably time to check your valves.

Thanks for your responses. My bike has 44K miles. The noise is there at start up. I rode it about 6 miles after the oil change before I had her back in the garage, so she got to about 195 deg f . I really don't want to hear I might need a valve adjust! I failed miserably trying to do one on a previous bike. I know the p.o. did one at 20K and I've read on multiple sites that Viffers aren't prone to needing much if any adjustment.

So after a spirited 30' ride, no more strange noises. I'm not complaining. Thanks all for your help.

Wow, a 30 foot ride. Time for a beer stop to celebrate.

I know you mean minutes, but couldn't resist.
