Went on my first ride today....about 20 bikes. I had new tires on and managed to keep up with the top 5 or so bikes but damn it wasn't easy....a few of the guys could have easily walked me if they wanted. Bike felt good and stable but the suspension is with a doubt worn out. Has about 76,000 miles on it!!! I was diving off in to sweepers at 90 still but I felt like the bike had more I could get too?

The suspension on the VFR new was OK.
With a bit of age it's crap.
At 76K M it's even crapper, (is that even a word?)
Do something, DMR, UD conversion, VTR lowers with upgraded internals and brakes/Ohlins rear, whatever takes your fancy.
You will not regret it and it will tranform your bike.

USD forks look awesome but takes time, cash and the solving of a few engineering problems which need competency. For now I fitted a Nitron street shock and serviced all back end bearings. Forks got linear springs, re-valve and 5wt quality fork oil (5wt because it needs to flow through ports & shim stacks) Good package and cost effective.

I just installed DMr fork cartridge kits + springs and the DMr custom rear shock in my '00. An amazing upgrade. Jamie--as a long-time ex-RT facility--explains well why his products may be better; in any case, it's a good bit less than RT, and he's a great guy to deal with. Fast responses to any questions. Easy install. Do not follow recommendations of 5th Gen. custom rear shock photo guide post here; he took way too much stuff off.

    Bike is tight, supple, wonderful.

The RT parts and what DMR sell are very similar. DMR will do a custom shim kit to suit you and your springs, you'll have to figure out what shims and springs to use with RT but they also give some good recipes, and a few of us have experimented enough to give you some guidance as well. I'd definitely get new springs and compression valves, and rebound valves are nice to do but won't offer as much benefit.

You can mix and match parts from other bikes as well, and you'll find that the 20mm cartridge dampers are common across lots of Hondas. VTR1000 fork internals are very similar and you can take the caps and damper rods from these to add adjustable rebound damping. Or you can use the VTR lowers with VFR uppers/internals so you can mount up some nice 4-piston calipers and de-link the brakes.

Edit: I agree with what ksoholm is saying about DMR service and pricing.
