Well if they have an open carry law in CO, make sure you replace your back protector with a bullet proof vest, seems cagers get really upset when they have to wait and you don't! ;)

Be careful Duccmann, CycleCruza says lane splitting will set you up for a fucked up day :D Seriously though, I've done it on occasion here in FL (where it's not legal) and it scares the bejesus out of me. I do "filter" sometimes just to get to the front of traffic at a red light when the vehicles are all stationary and I'm just filtering through at under 10mph (is that considered "lane splitting"?) but only if I'm in a huge hurry - better to just leave a little early and give yourself more time IMO.

Lane splitting is a way of life for us California riders, maybe not all of us but definitely for Duccmann and I. Regardless of speed, anytime your riding between 2 cars, it would be considered lane splitting. The proper term is actually, 'Lane Sharing' as you are not supposed to be riding on the painted lines but withing the lines with the other vehicle, thus "sharing" the lane. The first time I did it I was still riding with a learners permit and although a bit intimidating, once you get use to it, it becomes second nature.

However, when riding in groups, this needs to be discussed before you set out as once you start splitting, the group can easily get separated very quickly. Not all riders are comfortable with it.

    That's all I know--- ---
Didn't even think it was illegal at a light.
In all the years riding streets since 84 can't imagine not doin it.
Especially on surface streets sitting behind a car just waiting to be the meat in the sandwich
    SMH what a conundrum

Time to start the campaign for Nationwide Lane Splitting there Duccmann! Sounds like CycleCruza won't vote for it and GatorGreg sounds like he's on the fence. Maybe a tour of So Cal with some of us "splitters" would bring him over to the dark side...:Peace:

Come to the UK. Our roads are a bit smaller than yours & sharing the road is the only way to go. It does however help to practice it. Personally I don't see the point of using a bike & not taking advantage of some of its assets in a major town.

Done properly, lane splitting can actually be safer than sitting in a line. Now if your one of the guys that buzzes through cars doing 80mph while traffic is doing 10mph, it's only a matter of time before you decorate a cager' s door/quarter panel, etc.

Keep in mind, since it is a way of life here, the cagers are used to you going by. In areas where it isn't legal, YMMV.

No I'm courteous because I don't like bein scared when those guys fly by me in my cage. Take 6 different freeways a day, so I'm well versed on lane sharing etiquette.
Don't know if I can handle not doin it.

Just to clarify, as far as I have learned, it is not legal in California to carry out this practice. It is a matter of there being now law on the books to prevent it other than some sort of imprudent or dangerous driving if you actions riding dictate. When legislators there were wanting to make the action illegal, I understand it was the CHP who were the lead opponents to making it illegal.

Lane splitting in any place other that California, where is almost expected, is a potentially very dangerous move. This is nothing to do with you for the most part. It is that people do not expect it and you could find yourself schmucked while riding next to a cage or truck. We all know how often we have come close to being bumped off by someone changing lanes without shoulder checking where we have 6 - 7 feet of space between us and the cage. Imagine the outcome when there is only a foot or two. And a foot or two on the other side is another cage.

I have lane split in California several times on my trips down there. Often I would come up on heavy traffic and I notice many seem to see you and actually make room for you. Great people they are. I am comfortable with doing it there. But if they ever pass legislation here in British Columbia allowing it, I doubt I would ever do it here. So many people here as so fucking stupid and absent minded driving, the thought of doing this has broken a couple of my ribs. The amount of time that I think it would take for people here to accept this and get accustomed to it, far exceeds the time left in my life. I don't expect to pass in the next while either.

You bring up a good point about terminology, there are times on some of my favorite 2 lane twisty roads where there is a double yellow line most of the time, so there are times when it is necessary to 'share' the lane. Many times people will pull over enough to let me by, sometimes I have to cross the double lines.

What makes it hard on all of us are the harley dudes that go blasting between cars with their straight pipes pissing every one off.

Down here the Harley guys are usually slower, often times holding up others and when they think there's not enough room to squeeze by, they rev their motor as to say "Hey move over so I can get by!" The squids are usually the ones who do 80 between the cars and crossing back and forth over the lines (double yellows included) feeling they are entitled to be a douche! Then again, it does go both ways sometimes, I've seen Harley dudes WFO going between cars.

Lane splitting should be legal everywhere. If you think the drivers in your area are too stupid, fine, don't lane split. The Berkeley study of motorcycle wrecks found that at the worst, lane splitting was no more dangerous than motorcycle riding in general. Speed is key. If traffic is doing 35-40 move your ass back in line. Keep speed differential no more than 10 mph.

Absent minded drivers is all the more reason to lane filter. I'd rather take a glancing blow at a 10 mph speed difference, than be rear ended in a car sandwich by someone texting and not noticing traffic slowing. It's just another tool available for accident avoidance.

Lane splitting also reduces emissions from a pollution standpoint.

And this my biggest worry not splitting lanes, I see guys out here that don't practice it, probably from another state just sitting there sucking fumes and overheating their bikes.
Now all we need is someone to chimp in (Long sayin) that actually lives there.
Had a guy today doin about 45 and I'm cruising taking my time passing everyone and I see him looking in his mirror and starts riding the line to slam the door, so yah there's a ton of
clueless jealous people out here that would rather kill me then let me pass.

I lane share regularly. I also have been bumped on more than one occasion. Other than surprising you a bit, it's not that big of a deal.

I wish It were legal here in Canada. I have been bumped a few times in stop and go traffic on the highway when commuting. Now I sit to the side of the lane so if I get bumped hard I won't be part of a sandwich at least.
