Options for riding with spastic diarrhea? (don't open if squeamish)

As a long time frequent traveller in some of the more remote parts of the world I would be inclined to say that Immodium is your friend. It does depend a bit on what particular bug you have picked up though as if it's Giardia then you will need a specific drug to kill the parasite or it will keep coming back. Buscopan (one trade name for Hyoscine) can have an antispasmodic effect on the bowel which can help too, but it can make you sleepy. Everything has side effects, even the Immodium. Take enough of that to completely stop a really explosive gut bug in it's tracks and you may never shit again or at least it can feel that way. Plus there's usually a reason why your body is purging, it wants to get rid of whatever it is that's attacking it. So sometimes your better off to stay hydrated and let nature run it's course.

As far as the adult diapers thing goes, these can work to some extent, but if it's really explosive and high volume, then if you're riding in a typical sport touring posture, you can expect it to take the path of least resistance which is usually a scenic tour up your spine and possibly right out of your collar. If it's really bad you may end up with it in your gloves too. Hasn't happened to me personally but I've personally seen an airline seat with shit all over it including on the headrest, until the flight engineer came forward and stripped the seat to it's frame and took the whole shebang away in about four garbage bags. Aaaaaaah Air Merpati, exotic trips that you just never forget

So my suggestion would be to think hard about your fitness to do the trip as you are going to struggle with hydration, energy levels and concentration is likely to be seriously compromised from time to time too. If you get treatment and have it on the run, then the immodium should keep it in check, the adult diapers may be sufficient containment too but don't make things worse by riding when you really know you could be putting yourself at risk.

Thanks Fatbastard - I've been drinking lots of Gatorade to stay hydrated and I think I'm finally on the road to recovery now thanks to my doctor visit - he said I should be okay for St. Augustine. Your Air Merpati story made me LOL - reminded me of the time I got on a ride at Disney and put my hand down in some puke or diarrhea, still not sure what it was :glee: People in my family don't handle travel well - I remember my brother nearly died a few years ago after he caught some sort of intestinal bug in Central America - he was laid up in the hospital for weeks.

Unless one has commodious luggage and fairly unlimited packing space on a bike, I would suggest minigator use his buttplug instead of packs of those adult diapers. Internally, a physician could, in a pinch, write a prescription for Lomotil.

Since there doesn't seem to be much of a group if any, signed up for this excursion, how full of shit in this instance minigator is, doesn't matter much in the long runs.

anything with codine in it will bung u up as well .. so couple immodium and say mercindol and all good .. might not poo for 24 hrs but it works.. From what ive heard u need baggy jeans to fit the nappies on.
