hi there new to the forum and have a new vfr i got tonight and sadly as the title says its got a problem
its a 2002 vtec with 71k on the clock it starts and doesn't sound to bad. cold or warm to be honest but when applying the throttle a little a v loud clicking comes in
when riding if you pull the clutch in and then back out it goes away. but again applying some throttle it comes in
can make a video if it will help . but its not quiet by any means . a very loud tapping noise

were is a good place to start ?
most of the clips i have seen dont seem to be that bad
apart form changing the oil and filter , i plan to do that next weekend

Welcome from another fairly new member.

Could the noise be from a worn sprocket and chain set?
If its sloppy the chain might ride partway up on the teeth instead of down in the groves, and if it has a binding link, it may jump back into place.
Then, when you pull the clutch, the pressure keeping the chain out of the groves is released and all is quiet until you accelerate again.

right . have done some homework and found this clip online

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaYSXz2OV2w

mine is the same . although a little worse at 15s in that knock you can hear is present and woures me to boot
im now aware about the cam isues with the vtec engine
does this sound like a classic case of cam failure ?
and with out knowing no history on the bike, and having 71k miles on the clock.
am best replace the guide and chain as well?
and what are the pros and cons of fitting a manual one, how often do they need to be tightened?
and from looking at the design of the stock honda one . do they need to be replaced? or can you just re tighten the spring / re set them

i dont mind spending a few quid to put it right , as long as i can put it right .

Hey saxby, welcome from another newer member.

I think Joe has the right idea for tracking it down but given your new response I'm leaning more towards cam chain tensioner (CCT) noise. The video you posted definitely isn't moving and wouldn't have the chain/rear wheel spinning thus eliminating the chain/sprockets in my mind.

WARNING LOUD, turn volume down first. Check out this video, does it sound like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuBb5K6EZDw

In the comments the poster even responded saying that it was his CCTs.

Best of luck!

I'd also lean towards CCT's. Cam chain tensioners...

Take off the fairing and run the bike. If the noise is more on the right side of the engine it will be CCT's.

thanks for all the advise . dug out my old camera and did a video
right . here is my bike running

i have only had time to ride it home the once since buying it but that sound you can hear as the revs drop is what im woured about . over all i had a vfr800 vtec some years age . and sold it to put towards guying a house [ it had v low miles on it ] and it sounded smother them this new bike i have .
is the knock in the video the cct? it does sound louder on the right side of the bike

as i said before in my last post , what are my options ?
am best replace the guide and chain as well? or should they be still good at this millage 71k miles
and what are the pros and cons of fitting a manual one, how often do they need to be tightened?
and from looking at the design of the stock honda one . do they need to be replaced? or can you just re tighten the spring / re set them

Lets put it this way.. unless you are unemployed / retired & have time on your hands get the standard honda item.

They fail at 36,000 ish
They work perfectly till then.

Yes a bodge job is to retighten the spring (if you take it apart) - but I would put money you will doing this job again soon !

For the hassle of doing it the standard honda item is a fit & forget.

The chain & guide I'm not sure ever wear !!

You can get the parts from DSS (David Silver Spares), its unlikely you will need the buckets but you will not know until you get the old ones out.

Also buy 2 gaskets.

Another tip I have seen is to drill the tiny hole (in the gasket) out a little more to increase the oil flow - I think its 2mm !

& don't drop the buckets inside the engine...

ya thanks for the info . i will get new stock ones then .
from the look of it the manual after market ones seem a good idea. and althow i wont be doing mega miles i do like the idea of fitting and forgetting about it
the engine does sound off when cold .. but i was thinking that loud knocking when it revs down was something serous . i hope this cures it .
will treat it to some new oil and filter as well as i have no idea when it was last done
and just hope i dont drop the bucket

Sounds like the cct's to me as well. Mine made the same noise. Not a really big job to change them but research it first. If you do it the way Honda does in the manual it is a big job. There are easier ways to change them without having to remove so many parts. There are some pretty good posts right here explaining how to do it. You might also want to try changing the oil too. Mine made no noise with fresh oil and only started getting noisy when it was time to change it anyway until they got bad enough that that didn't help.

You don't fit manual CCT's and forget about them. You have to readjust them every couple of thousand miles. Like, Pete already said a few times, the standard Honda CCT's are the fit and forget (until around 36k miles when they start making noise again). Just get the standard CCT's, as more than likely, the manual cct's will trash your engine, unless you get the tension just right and reinspect/adjust every few thousand miles. The manual CCT's like to leak oil out of the adjuster too....

I would love to see a 25k mile review of this CCT reset. My guess is it will only get you a few hundred or maybe even a few thousand extra miles out of the CCT. I would just be worried about the fail nature of the CCT after being rewound once or twice. Will it just be a soft fail like normal, where nothing breaks, but it just gets noisy? Or will it be a hard failure and break some stuff?

I agree... probably better off buying the part. Especially since they can be found for like $75 brand new on ebay.
