Poor gas milage need help!

    I've had my 2003 for over a year now and I get about 27-29 miles per gallon. I've recently changed spark plugs but I know my millage is still not good any ideas what it could be out what I could change to get better millage?

    Get out of first gear! Just kidding.

    Does your coolant temperature hover around 170* to 220* when at 45mph or better?
    If it runs below that range, changing the thermostat may solve your issue.

    Is your air filter clean? A plugged filter would affect mileage.

    You get 27-29 mpg and don't like it....

    That's basically the same figures as mine

    I normally get 115-130 miles from 20 + litres. Last tank was 129miles, 20.89 litres.

    There is nothing wrong with my bike - lol other than the rider....

    I just checked my Gas Cubby log for my previous 2003 VFR, over the course of 8700 miles, I got an average of 37.9 mpg.

    I get close to 200 miles before a fill up, no problem. Something is off.

    I know that no one except me has forgotten the shift into sixth cog.. This has happened more than once when I am on one of my missons to Wal*Mart. It may affect mileage but it will not stop me from putting gas in the bike.

    Actually that may not be to far off. I've rode with a lot of riders, all have their version of riding and throttle control. so many forget or maybe they are in tune to the sound IDK, but most seem to stay one or two gears to low. You may be surprised if when you're just putting around try shifting sooner. That and on the 6th gen stay out of V-tec. I've always thought it odd how so many seem to have worse millage than what I see. yet I know I don't lolly gag. I'm seeing 45-47 mpg, but then, it's a 5th gen.

    The bikes have a rev range - I try to stay near the max torque end - makes riding it easier..:smile-new:

    On my 6th gen, I usually get around 180 miles out of a tank before the last gas tick mark starts flashing.
    Could probably go 200 miles. This would put me between 32-36 mpg.

    That said, I'm also smaller than most guys. I also run mostly highway to and from work and on trips.
    I like to get up to speed quick in VTEC for fun and go super fast, but then settle into 6th.
    I could probably pull better mileage if I didn't do that. I could also do better when I'm not ripping up the town with friends.

    Depending on your size and how you ride, that mileage may not be too bad for you.
    Doesn't hurt to make sure your moto is up to par with maintenance.
    Then assess how you ride to see if that kind of mileage makes sense for you.

    Maybe the change is needed in how you ride...or maybe not if how you ride is super fun.
    So like BB says, just don't let it stop you from putting gas in the moto.

    On rides where we had the same bike, 4th gens this time, I always seem to get better mileage. yet we we're riding the same route. though I haven't a clue to how they drove as in shifting with throttle management and all. kinda funny how this is all over the place, it's gota be the pilot.

    I guess it would be safe to say gas milage is inversely proportional to the average RPM your ride at.

    I only weigh 140 so you can't use that excuse....

    However I do find first up to 50mph is fine.... lol

    If it hasn't been asked, how tall are you and how much do you weigh? Try a touring windscreen. That alone increased my highway fuel mileage by getting the blast of wind off of my shoulders.

    I changed my air filter, old one was pretty bad I'm hoping that increases millage. But I'm 5' 10" 200 lbs. I don't get too high in the rpms normally. At times I do I can't say that I don't have fun on my bike lol

    Your scales will show 140 but I know you mixed gas divers like to suck on that He once in awhile to entertain the moppets...

    2 things have caused my VFR800 milage to drop to substantually, one pair valves carboned to open and the other was one lead not homed properly.

    The pair valve stuck also caused the odd back fire on underrun and the plug lead was noticable powerless though oddly the engine was still smooth.

    I never really sorted my sixth gen out, mileage wise, unless I made a conscious decision to stay out of VTEC. That's when it killed my mileage.

    On my 5th gen I have now, I was starting to get pretty bad mileage. I also noticed my rear rotor was getting worn down. I took the rear caliper off and investigated it. The sliding pins were dry so the pads were jammed shut so to speak. I had metal flakes on my swingarm from it eating my rotor. I took it apart, cleaned the pins and lubed them with silicone brake grease and it's substantially different. My mileage had been increasing since. For example, depending on how I rode, I'd hit 100 miles with three bars showing. Then it was four bars. This last tank, I've decided to not rocket around everywhere, combined with a lot of freeway riding to my office and appointments and I hit 100 miles with six bars showing. I haven't even looked at the plugs yet. Also, I was running with low pressure in my tires, the front dropped to 30psi, the rear dropped to 34psi. I topped then off​ to factory spec, 36/42psi and that's made a big difference too.
