17/43 is stock on a 5th gen Jim.
    16/43 is stock for a 6th gen.
A 16 front on the 5th gen is the same as adding 3 teeth to the rear.
I have a 17/45 on mine and I prefer it that way.
I had a 16/43 prior, but wanted to get the front of the chain away from the swingarm guide.

Good to know OZ. I will keep you riding impressions. I didn't get it out enough to really tell much difference. I tend to ride around with the tach at or around 5K or better. I do not pay much attention to gearing unless I am in corners and then I tend to lose track. (I am always in the wrong gear it seems.)

Today I worked on my chain and sprockets. Got the fairings off, chain and sprockets off, then I spent about an hour, half a big can of WD-40 and about two cups of kerosene scrubbing all the crud out of the front sprocket area. There was some OLD muck in there! Clean enough to eat off of now.

I do have a question tho; when I removed the slave cylinder some oil dumped out. Do I have a leak, or is this normal? It doesn't seem like it should be happening but my clutch reservoir level is not dropping, it's always the same.

Now I need to install the master link. My borrowed chain breaker tool broke, so I'm waiting on it's replacement parts. Ugh.

You are a better person than me. I just knock the big pieces of crude off with a screwdriver and button it up. As for breaking chains I grind off the riveted end and use my chain tool to push the roller pin out. I don't think any chain tool is strong enough to bust the rivets without breaking.

I just used a Dremel and cut the chain. Took no time at all. Maybe three minutes, max.

I MacGyver'd my chain on today. The C clamps worked. I'm going to remeasure my master link tomorrow and clean all of the packing grease off of the chain. I did a couple of short rides, so I'll double check it again as well.

I use a chain breaker tool .... good to have. Don't have to worry about hot sparks flying everywhere ruining the clear coat on my paint / plastic.

All of my Sparks flew away from the bike. It all depends on where you point them, I guess.

One of the lesser known laws of physics states the amount of sparks generated by a grinder is indirectly proportional to the size of the grinder. Later in the 21st Century, this was amended since some sciency dudes were thinking a grinder could be a large or small dude or a popular sandwich.

I just use a small drill mounted grinding stone to take off the old staked master link rivet ends. There is very little sparking. I break the new chain by taking it to the grinder. It makes quick work of the unwanted link. Now the bench grinder makes sparks like God intended, like sharpening lawn mower blades!
